What do you think of Greg Manusky

Yes, I mean the defense gets tired when you have an offense that was averaging maybe two td's per game!!! Let me say this to the people here, the Saints defense was ranked in the bottom half of the league last year but they came out on top because they stripped the ball and got turnovers from the other team mainly because the other team was desperate to run the score up before the Saints offense got on track. I said this on another post that the main problem with our team has been the quarterback position. Brees and their offense coverup a weak defense and the same thing with the Patriots and Colts and their quarterbacks. Manusky is good.

Secondary's not that good...so, when you look at the overall talent on defense, Manusky's done a pretty good job with them.

This.

And I think the bad play of the offense is the beginning of the season has also made Manusky and the defense look even worse.

I think coaches speak positive or neutral about one another in case there comes a time one gets promoted and needs to assemble a staff.
Well...if Manusky is not retained, its likely because Sing was fired.

If both Sing and Manusky are fired, I have a sneaking feeling that Wade Phillips would be our next DC.

Why? Wade may not be a good HC, but he's a very good DC and knows how to run the 3-4.
Like him but needs to get more creative in blitz packages.
The 3-4 is based on the offense not knowing where pressure is going to come from but Manusky fails to dial up clever blitz's. He loves to rush three which is kind of dumb. If thats the case we should just run the tampa 2.

I love the 3-4 but we dont use it the way a LeBeau or Belichick does.
Don't really know much about him other then when the game is on the line he gets super conservative.

The straight-up, uncomplicated defenses we see just reek of Sing's idea of simple schemes with success coming from individual effort spurred by motivation...

Sing messes with the offense, so he must also be screwing up the defense.

I think you got it. We keep everybody in their lanes for the most part, as to not give up anything in the run game while still maintaining a structured zone in pass coverage. Every now and again we hit the red button and pull off a stunt or something fancy (for the 80's), but for the most part we put a premium on positioning and tackling, while any pass rush we get comes from a 4 man rush, or Justin Smith just flat out whoopin' his man...sometimes 2.

Another factor that keeps us in our stay at home scheme is probably the fact that Manusky was used to getting consistent pressure from the steroid enhanced Shawne Merriman. The plan was simple:"Shawne, I need you to get to the QB". Badaboom! Instant pass rush... although I am liking what LaBoy's showing us more and more. He's a noticeable menace out there as an edge rusher. Might not have the sheer bull rush capability of a guy like Merriman '07, but he's flying around the edge like he has a rocket up his ass. If not for the neck tie tactics utilized by the Lambs LT last sunday, we're talking about all the b.s. roughing the passer penalties we took that extended drives instead of the holds that called back TD's... maybe we secretly don't want to get to the QB; just make em jumpy.

All in all I think Manusky's pretty vanilla but he's a solid DC, and he'll get better as the team gets better. This defense needs upgrades at key areas before we'll truly see a top flight 3-4 defense though. Clements physically can't play man coverage, Goldson is more of a liability in all areas than anybody thought he would be and I'm pretty sure Franklin flat out doesn't give a f**k if he maintains gap discipline or keeps his ILB's clean; he just wants to flip a coin and shoot f**kin' A gaps all damn day. We'll get there eventually I'm sure. In the meantime we'll just continue to make do with what we have.

As I said earlier; I do have high hopes for LaBoy as our edge rusher. That's the lynch pin to all of it. Our DB's will probably look like all pro's if LaBoy can give us just a little more. It's just too bad we lost Briggs; I think these 2 really would have been a handful for any LT.

We are very good at applying pressure with 4 rushers. Isn't that what every team dreams of doing? If the refs called it right, STL should have had at least 4 more holding calls then they did.

However, we do also need to mix it up with blitzes but we were playing a QB who gets the ball out extremely fast and accurate so max cover was the best plan.

Yah they were holding Justin Smith all day.

agreed greg man looks good when franklin is demanding double teams and goldnon is locking down the field , that was last year and losing mlewis was a mistake
I still like Manusky, this defense is still pretty consistent in certain things and I'll point out two of them.

1. Stopping the run - Niners are stout and everyone in the league knows it.

2. Red Zone efficiency - There have been plays where individuals blow their assignments like Dashon Goldson on that Steven Jackson TD run. But overall this defense holds teams to field goals. Posters point out this defense is weak in the 2-minute drill but if you think about it, in most of the 2 minute situations this defense has been put in this season, the opposing offense was held to a field goal. (Saints, Falcons, Rams)
