Vermeil was strong enough, and convincing enough, without being a tyrant, to make that work for the Greatest Show on Turf and a Super Bowl.Originally posted by mississippi_sam:
Firing Mike Martz after the 2008 season. Big mistake. I don't care what philosophy you want to use. Martz is a great offensive mind. If you want to win, you have to score. It's not a 17-points-is-enough-to-win-if-you-play-great-defense kind of league any more. I think that was a terrible move. Especially in the face of not having an established guy to replace him with. Please. Don't give us that identity load of crap, Mike. You screwed the pooch.
this.
in fact, all that stuff is problematic, and right behind the decision to fire Martz I would put his game management and preparation. But Martz was part of the reason Sing was made the full-time head coach in the first place. They might have not seen eye-to-eye, but somehow for those 8 games they found enough balance to get the team playing very well. Not sure why they couldn't have found a way to continue working together.

I have seen more good guys lose their jobs (myself included) because they did not admit their short comings, Mike Singletary is not ready to be an NFL head coach. So his biggest mistake is thinking he could, or being to prideful to admit he can't.
