This defense has played well for 3 consecutive games and has been causing turnovers.
I attribute 2 losses to Singletary/Manusky in trying to think Bowman is better than Spikes when critical stops are needed. If we keep Spikes in against CAR, we win.

Why all of the hate on our defense?

The defense is lackluster because of the secondary. We have a soft pass defense that gets burned on big plays. We also cannot defend the screen (secondary needs to help on that), and we allow wide receivers to much room.

the Niner defense in 2009 gave up 281 points for 16 games. In 2010 through 8 games we have given up 178 points--which would be 356 points for a full season.
The expectations were that the defense would be better this season--not worse.
The 2009 offense was one of the worst in 3rd down conversions and time of possession ever. Many of us Niner fans thought the offense would be much better in 2010 controlling the clock which would allow the defense to be on the field a lot less in 2010 and be that much more dominant.
To me--that explains at least my trouble with the Niner defense of 2010--it isn't what I thought it was going to be.

Because we made Matt Moore and the Panthers offense look like Peyton Manning and the Colts when every OTHER single team was able to shut them down.
We frequently can't defend the two minute drill: Saints, Falcons x2 and Panthers.
We can't pressure the QB and the vast majority of the sacks that we were able to obtain last year were against division opponents. Hence the pressure was likely due to expansive tape and scheme, not individual talent.
Our secondary is weak, Clements is a liability and Spencer is a little overrated now on the webzone. Will James shouldn't be seeing the field.
Our safeties consistently bite on play action and feaflickers and can't force any turnovers.
I think that's about it.

because theres leftover hate from hating on the offense and coaching lol. i think the defense is playing better but they do deserve some blame since every mediocre QB that we've played has torched our secondary

To answer the question all you have to do is look at the stats. Our offense is ranked 13th in total yards, while our defense is 24th in yards allowed. Anyone not knowing more would conclude that we have a decent offense and a crappy defense.

We are 2-1 in our last 3 games.
What's the difference? Turnovers.

because we are a conservative 3-4 defense that can't get to a QB let alone cover a WR, TE or RB...hell even QB's are converting 3rd and 17 with their legs rather than their arms. Our defense is soft. No pass rush+ can't cover= easy TD for the other team.

Is this true, because turnovers or not, i would never expect our O to be 13th for total yards. For everyone to blame the O as much as they do, i'd expect the numbers to be the opposite. 13th in yards allowed, and 24th in offense.
Wonder how some are gonna try to spin this one.

It's simple: Neither the Defense or Offense is looking very good because of turnovers. How many times has this offense turned the ball over when in scoring position or then giving the opponent automatic 3 points?
We are 2-1 in the last three games. Why? Because we have limited turnovers. We have played a couple of crappy teams early on also and lost because of turnovers. You will all see, if we keep this to a minimum, the offense will move inside the top 15 and the defense will improve to top 10.

Yup yup...not sure about top 10 defense but the encouraging news is that the offense hasn't been giving it up and the defense finally got a few of their own. Obviously, the emphasis will remain on offense to sustain drives, minimize TO's (or if they do give one up to give them up in deep territory) and for the defense, to get off the field on 3rd downs, generate it's own TO's and stop folding in critical times. TOP is NOT an issue this year and not all TO's necesarily have hurt us.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind a similar game plan to what we did against Denver and CAR but allow our QB to move around more. We had the CAR game in the bag by playing safe but then David Carr happened.
We may see a more balance run to pass ratio this week as Troy and Johnson have had more time to work and prepare but I wouldn't be surprised if Gore goes for 130.
