Anytime you win it is a positive, however, let's not forget; this was DENVER. The Broncos are a mess defensively and in the locker room. McDaniel chased away not only Mike Nolan, who had done a very good job with their defense, but also Brandon Marshall and a couple others that he personally didn't like. In Denver they are talking about McDaniel like we talk about Singletary. Lots of dissension there.
The big test will come after the bye. This was a nice win but we should be guarded in our enthusiasm.
True, but we couldn't even beat winless Carolina a week ago. I don't think we as fans can really appreciate how good this win feels to the players...espcially how they found ways to win, as opposed to inventing new ways to lose winnable games.
exactly. When we lose to Carolina, it's a total team failure, and Alex shouldn't get the blame. When we win against Denver, *it was Denver*, so Troy shouldn't get any credit.
LOL, Alexcuses are not only to relieve Alex of any blame for his classic bust performances, but they are also to relieve other QBs of any credit for their great performances. It's funny how this definition evolves and expands as convenience dictates.
i think its funny that the haters are talking about Troy like the "Alexcusers" talk about Alex.
And don't give me the "oh, we never have good QB play because Alex sucks and so when we get even kinda good QB play we have to celebrate like its the super bowl because Alex sucks, he's the suckiest suck that ever sucked, etc." People are over-hyping Troy Smith and they're the same people who accuse everyone else of over-hyping Alex Smith. its the same delusion.
This.
3 points thru 3 quarters and 37 yards in the first half in the air hardly has me doing cartwheels. It was good to see Gore making plays and the defense step up and create turnovers when we needed them.
Overall it was a nice win, but it was Denver and luck was finally on our side for a few of those plays.
At one point, we ran 29 times to 15 passes. Alex hasn't been held down to this extent. He's played terrible even when we pass heavy. The only time Alex has shown anything is has been out of one specific type of formation in terms of where he stands.
Once we passed more with Troy (out of any formation) he did well. Quarter by quarter stats:
4 for 6 with 83 rating
0 for 3 with 39 rating
3 for 4 with 116 rating
5 for 6 with 158 rating
So, he only had one bad quarter where we only called 3 pass plays or he only threw 3 times.

Troy did not play that well. Good fortune smiled on him yesterday. He was lucky he was not intercepted on the high risk pass to Walker, and he got a lucky bounce on his fumble (yes, he did fumble). The defense played well yesterday, which really helped him.
Am I saying he won't be good, Not at all. I am contending that his future success is still up in the air. "Let's try him out," some of you say. "What do we have to lose?" I thought you wanted to win the division this year. Or would you rather use this year to "experiment?" Go ahead and experiment, but I don't want to hear you crying if he begins to lose games because of high risk passes that backfire.
The Alex haters explained that they wanted to move on from Alex because they were convinced he was not an "elite top 5 or 10 QB."
But they seem excited about using Troy. Does that mean they have decided he has the potential to be a top 5 or 10? What are the chances of that? These guys do not come along that easily. The chances are that Troy may only end up average, at best. So you have changed your standards?

He could be a one hit wonder, or he could be hit and miss like Alex or he could be the real deal. I'm pretty optimistic however. He seemed to have some really good instincts, and I don't believe that is coachable. If he truly has leadership skills (which I don't think is coachable either), then the rest is coachable and I think he has potential.
