Yeah, but it's one thing to call a penalty on a blatant helmet to helmet hit such as Meriweather's hit on Todd heap and then to call a penalty on a little wimpy arm to the helmet such as what happened to Lawson today. They need to make the rules interpretable and allow referees to use some common sense and determine whether a helmet to helmet hit, or any kind of blow to the helmet was intentional by that individual and also whether it was violent enough to warrant a penalty. They shouldn't be throwing flags on accidental hits such as Lawson's, especially when there is little to no harm done.

then why dont they play two hand touch? orton was gonna get hit clean by lawson and he ducked so his head would touch manny's arms and he got a penalty for it. this is ridiculous.

You cant hit the QB in the head. It`s a good rule. I dont like the call but the rule is sound, Sh!t happens!

if they dont want QBs getting hit they should say theyre sacked on contact and completely kill football all together. with all the new contact rules offensive players need to be better actors than players. i agree they shouldnt be able to kill the guys but a little hit like that to get a penalty was ridiculous.

The rule reads you cant make contact with a blow to the head. So I can understand some of the calls even though I dont agree with them. What about the Vicious hit Manny had on Orton when he came free up the middle. That was a big time hit yet no flag because it was clean. The qbs get their asses kicked on nearly every play. I`d like to see you try it!

im sure if orton was a better actor he could squeeze a penalty out of that hit too. it hit him right in the chest. that other hit was complete bulls**t. dont give me the i'd like to see you try it stuff man, if i were getting paid millions to play QB i would be getting hit too. theyre killing the game, the offense has such an edge over the defenses now days its ridiculous. from the QB to the receivers. the only position that the defense can actually go after without fear or ridiculous penalties is the RB but that'll change soon too.

By the letter of the law the ref has to call it. I have seen wimpy looking hits ruin careers and I have seen woo hits do nothing. How it looks and feels cant be left up to judgment. The refs have to call it.
i was hoping orton went out hurt for acting like a b***h
referees want to see themselves when they go home and rewind tivo
The first one was pure bad luck for Manny, because he caught him while Orton was going down; nevertheless, we all know the rules when a defensive player touches a QB's dome, them the rules, which sucks but oh well. The second one was pure horse sh*t!

I'd gladly take those hits if it meant I'd be making the money they do. Plus the fact was Orton ducked into the contact. Nothing Manny could do. I don't see how you can defend this. When Troy Smith was evading pass rushers I think a Denver player brushed a finger off Troy's helmet, better call a "roughing the passer"

I dont see how you can defend against the calls. The rules read clearly

I've been watching football for a long time and those two penalties were the worst penalties I have seen. If your gonna call those penalties your just not letting the defense play. What's a defender supposed to do if the qb lowers his head and the defender makes contact with him. Getting to the qb is so difficult as it is and now they make it so difficult because you can't touch the qb anywhere.

The NFL is ruining the game, you can't play football if your gonna make those calls.

This pussifacation of the league is ruining the game I love.

how true

I nearly lost it after the second penalty. It is getting ridiculous

What Orton did was the equivalent of a batter in baseball standing on the plate.

How do you throw a strike and not hit the batter?

It was a good call under the rules.

The rule just has problems. The QB can't be allowed to take advantage like Orton did. He chose to fall to the ground right before contact. Manny was going for a legal hit before Orton moved.

Hypothetical: If a QB is in a 4th and long in the playoffs and needs to convert, what's stopping them from purposely initiating illegal contact? Like say, headbutting the defender. Any provision for that in the rules?
Since we lead the league in penalties, I think the refs go into the game looking for penalties. I've seen a lot of bad calls for us this whole season.

Another poster suggested something about intent factoring in. Like a 5 yard or 15 yd variety. That may be an option, and it sounds reasonable.

You're an idiot. straight up. Like, i get your logic, but use common sense, that was not a "hit" or a "blow" to the head. that was orton ducking into manny's arm.

That is very true!!!

Jordon always got the calls because he must of been fouled otherwise he would have scored. That definately is a huge factor in officiating games. Obviously they are NFL fans or they wouldnt do the job.
