QB - Lost Shaun Hill and put Nate Davis on PS (for David Carr and Troy Smith)
RB - Anthony Dixon is a plus over Glen Coffee, but is underutilized. Brian Westbrook is never utilized ( we gave up a good special teams person in Michael Robinson)
FB - Moran Norris (same old stuff)
TE - Nate Bynum has a good future, but is not a starter
OLine - Anthony Davis either not ready or a bust. No improvement overall in Oline two rookies and a new Oline coach Still sucks.
WR: Isaac Bruce retired. Brandon Jones - whatever happened to him. Josh Morgan is still here and overrated, Jason Hill is invisible, Ted Ginn Jr can't catch, Dominique Zeigler and Kyle Williams don't see much action. Overall our wide receivers are neither physical nor big.
DE - no changes really (lost Balmer) . No improvement in pass rushing. We look like we're rushing under water.
DT - Aubrayo Franklin is still here and not doing anything, Ricky Jean Francois has not yet made significant impact.
OLB : Manny Lawson, Parys Haralson, Ahmad Brooks, Travis LaBoy, Diyral Briggs
ILB : Patrick Willis, Takeo Spikes, NaVorro Bowman
We are good in stopping the run. However, None of these guys however ever touch the opposing QB and are horrible stopping screen passes.
Secondary: Lost Dre Bly, Marcus Hudson, and Mark Roman for Phillip Adams and Will James is it?). We have one of the worst secondary. Nate Clements is getting caught with his pants down.
Taylor Mays only got promoted because Michael Lewis left.
In short, we really have not upgraded are starting personnel from last year, especially in the Wide Receiver and Secondary Positions. These areas have been overlooked this offseason. Pass rushing personnel also.
This all points to management and coaches ineptness to upgrade our depth with quality players so we have the flexibility to bench starters who underperform.
When a coach says "let's just pray that Alex doesn't get hurt". What does he do? Does he go out and try to find a quality veteran that's available just in case?
How many times have we really seen signficant roster changes. Yeah we hear we signed this guy and that guy, but they never play.
We have the pretty much the same personnel and problems when Mike Nolan was coach. We are what our record is. We are a bad team.

How did we improve our 53 man roster from last year?

Since the two rookie lineman haven't panned out yet we really are flat talent wise from last year, also as Alex Smith did not take the projected step forward. That still should translate into a close match to last year's record of 8-8, not 1-6.

We might be more talented than last year, we might be less talented or as you say we're the same as last year
However talent alone is not enough to win in this league.

Agreed. Even talented guys need coaching

Well even if we didn't improve the roster it's reasonable to think the players on the team would get better.
But you need a coaching staff to accomplish that.

Yep, and half of the zone thought all of those changes were upgrades

Alex is having a good year. He's in the top half of most stats, and has more yards then Tom Brady....Alex is not the problem.

Nonsense.
The Cowboys, Patriots, Raiders, Eagles, and Dolphins all have given up more, or about the same amount of points as our defense.
And you probably all think they are SUPER AMAZING FANTASTICALLY better than our defense. Well, they are not.
Funny how the Rams have the same roster, with injuries, yet they still find a way to win ball games this year. I wonder what is different about that team?

What is with you Alex Smith lovers? He is tied for 25th in QB rating, how is that good?
Yardage doesn't matter if you turn the ball over. If yardage was most important JTO would be in the 49er Hall of Fame.

we did nothing to really change or improve anything. we hoped that at 8-8 last year and more continuity this year we would seize the West after Warner retired and the Cards lost a lot of good free agents.
It was kind of like an offseason 'prevent defense' type of philosophy. We didn't make any aggressive moves just hoped the season would fall our way because the other teams all suck.

QFT.
People still don't understand how important a good QB is to every facet of the team. Our QB sucks --> we suck.

Cool man! You were so right! Well done! You're so happy to be able to say "I told you so!" Sorry some of us wanted the outlook to be optimistic. I'm pissed our team sucks and believed they were upgrades and that Alex Smith would pan out. Yet, here you are, smirking and snickering because you were the one to adamantly say they they suck. Be bigger than yourself for once. f**k.

The line was our worst part. We have 2 rookies playing badly and an injured center plus Chilo. So it's not better. Plus our secondary is absolutely horrific. Also an inconsistent pass rush.
We still have zero speed on offense other than Vernon Davis. Gore is slow. Morgan is a snail. We don't use Ginn or Westbrook.
This team is not much improved. We may be worse and the record reflects it.
