Grade 49ers' OC Mike Johnson vs. the Raiders

If our Oline is struggling, why not throw in some designed quick passes? That's what we ALWAYS used to do with Steve and Jeff. Heck, McCarthy did it for a majority of last year with GB.

C+

That seems fair to me. I gave him a straight C but in retrospect I regret not giving him the plus, both for the win and the effective adjustments at the half.

Started off with Play Action to Morgan to start the game.

From then til the 2nd Half it was A LOT of Bell Cow.

2nd Half it started out MORE of the same.

Direct snap to Frank was a good play cause they weren't expecting it.

Same for screen to Westbrook.

The Counter by Dixon was great. Too bad Staley held on that. He didn't even have to hold.

Vernon's TD was a good rebound from the penalty.

I believe that the Crabtree TD was on a Streak. That was gorgeous and a good way to rebound from the stupid 2 yard Bell Cow play.

But the reason I give a C- is cause Johnson called too many Draws up the middle and then following a successful play(screen to Westbrook is perfect example) went right back to it with Frank, drawing more Defenders into the box.

We gotta get away from that sh!t not go right back to it cause it worked. Also note that the Raiders ran a PERFECT reverse that caught our Linebackers napping.

One thing I'll always remember as a younger fan, was Madden and Summerall pointing out that our phylosphy was never the same thing twice and sometimes you'd only see a successful play once all game and that Walsh (and even Seifert) wouldn't go to the well too much to keep the Opposing D guessing.

We go right back to the same play WAY too much.

Unfortunately the only reason that direct snap worked was because of Alex's bad nap fake. See, the only play action that works is the stuff that is believable, and EVERYONE believed that we had an awful shot in the foot mistake.

Way to turn a positive into a negative.
I was kinda half eating and half paying attention to the game during the direct snap.OMG, Smith sold it! I totallyh was fooled as Alex sold it so good. I started to yell like WTF. I was glad after the 15 yards!

C at best. First half was atrocious.
We need to get away from the boot-leg play. It hasn't worked once since we've been running it. Smith is either running it out of bounds or throwing it away. Also we have to get away from running it up the middle so much.

that was on the o line not playcalling
C+. He did call a decent game in the second half.
[quote=binary2nd]C. The formations we use still aren't the best for our personnel, mainly our QB. We still telegraph our plays, total vanilla when it comes to running plays. Really, Alex bailed us out on Offense in a game full of penalties and poor pass protection.
This!

We dont even have close to average play calling. We dont use all of our weapons enough (Davis, Crabs, Westbrook, Dixon, Ginn, even Bynham). It feels like we run a series of random plays without any over all strategy. We go from ultra conservative to trying to pass 50 yards down field. We still are sending out 1 WR to be covered by 3 DBs.

Imagine how much better we would be if we subed in Dixon and Westbrook for a few series a game? Why is Morgan streaking downfield instead of Ginn? Why is our All pro TE only touching the ball twice a game? Why can't we hit Crabs back to back, yet we can hand the ball off to Gore 5 consecutive times?

Johnson's hands may very well be tied, but I give him a D-. I'm not sure how the play calling could get much worst at the NFL level (If it wasn't for Jimmy Raye that is)?
C+ Just enough to get by. Shades of Raye. It seems MJ was afraid to open it up in the first half. I hope he starts with the spread next week instead of SOS.

The worst Oline play I've seen in a while. Staley was b***hed-slapped all day.
I think the 1st half was horrible and if it wasn't for a since of urgency coming early enough this game we would have probably gone down with our 6th loss. The second half was much better but you could just about make the call for each play and that's not a good thing. Sing needs to let the O-Cord do as he needs to do because if we are in close games every game till the end we will lose some games. This offense is so much better when spread out. I don't understand and will never understand this crazy notion to not play to the QB's and best players strengths.
P.S.

Can we please get an answer as to why we had another 2 minute drill meltdown? How does this happen? Smith, Sing, Johnson are all equally responsible. How do we continue to be completly aloof as to time managment?
Do you guys think the rain contributed to the difference in offensive production in the 1st half vs. 2nd half?
I gave him a B-. What I would like is that the playmakers we have in Westbrook and Dixon be used more. Dixon's TD (negated by Staley's holding) was just a great effort !

Just weird.

People complain about raye being too predictable, now you're complaining that MJ isn't predictable?

lol
