B- seems about right. The couple questionable calls were offset by couple good calls. Execution if the plays was about the same. But he is most definitely better than Jimmy Raye

C+. A little above average, but some of the play-calls leave me scratching my head. Two screen plays in a row? Two 3rd and long HB Draws from the Shotgun? A fake reverse?

Just weird.

People complain about raye being too predictable, now you're complaining that MJ isn't predictable?

I don't mind 3rd and long HB draws. Once in a blue moon, they DO pick up a first down. They pick up 5+ yards normally, helping with the field position battle... and it's generally safe.

Of course, I hate them when we're past our 40 yard line. I can understand the conservatism when it's on our side of the field, but not when we've moved past a certain point.
1st half : F

observation: first time we REALLY saw the bootleg and the Raiders were all over it. The Oline couldnt block it and Johnson kept running it.. Smith looked bad b.c there was pressure on almost EVERY pass attempt!! I think he started 2-11 ?? not good, and Johnson did NOT open it up till the final minutes of the first half when we got our 3pts, horrible gameplan first half..

2nd half : A

observation: we spread it out and we see Smith shine. how long do we have to continue to NOT start the game off this way? The pass opened up the run and Gore had a HUGE 2nd half.. aswell did Crabs and VD and Smith came alive..
C. The formations we use still aren't the best for our personnel, mainly our QB. We still telegraph our plays, total vanilla when it comes to running plays. Really, Alex bailed us out on Offense in a game full of penalties and poor pass protection.
He gets an F for the first half and a B+ for the second half. I think he deserves an overall C with a + for getting the win.

C+

I gave him a B.
I gave him a B-
C-

Started off with Play Action to Morgan to start the game.

From then til the 2nd Half it was A LOT of Bell Cow.

2nd Half it started out MORE of the same.

Direct snap to Frank was a good play cause they weren't expecting it.

Same for screen to Westbrook.

The Counter by Dixon was great. Too bad Staley held on that. He didn't even have to hold.

Vernon's TD was a good rebound from the penalty.

I believe that the Crabtree TD was on a Streak. That was gorgeous and a good way to rebound from the stupid 2 yard Bell Cow play.

But the reason I give a C- is cause Johnson called too many Draws up the middle and then following a successful play(screen to Westbrook is perfect example) went right back to it with Frank, drawing more Defenders into the box.

We gotta get away from that sh!t not go right back to it cause it worked. Also note that the Raiders ran a PERFECT reverse that caught our Linebackers napping.

One thing I'll always remember as a younger fan, was Madden and Summerall pointing out that our phylosphy was never the same thing twice and sometimes you'd only see a successful play once all game and that Walsh (and even Seifert) wouldn't go to the well too much to keep the Opposing D guessing.

We go right back to the same play WAY too much.

I dunno but I see some predictability with these calls. Especially when you go Play Action on the 1st play of the game.

I truly think he shows a lot of promise as an OC. Considering the guy is essentially running Jimmy Raye's offense, it shows he better understands today's game by his differences in play calls. I can only imagine what HIS offense would look like if he were to have a full offseason to implement it.

I'm not saying he's been flawless by any means, it's just a tough situation he was put in and he's done just fine so far in my book.

Unfortunately the only reason that direct snap worked was because of Alex's bad snap fake. See, the only play action that works is the stuff that is believable, and EVERYONE believed that we had an awful, shot to the foot, mistake.
