Vernon had absolutely ZERO to do with Smith throwing that INT. I don't care if Vernon was taking a nap on the field on that play. That doesn't excuse Alex for throwing that ill-advised pass.

Like everyone says...when things break down, Smith turns into a p***y and panics. Roll right, throw it away or throw an INT.

No way was it all Clements' shoulders. Dude made an outstanding Int and almost ran it back. Yes he fumbled away the game but at least the Falcons were pinned back deep in their territory. The defense still had a chance to stop them and they didnt.

Alex Smith's poor play were the reason that we couldn't score more then 7 points on offense. This last loss was more reflection of the poor play from Alex then anything else. Only scoring 7 points on offense is the number 1 reason we lost that game. Only scoring 7 points on offense you deserve to lose the game.

Really? Because with 1:07 left on the clock at the Falcons' seven yardline, the 49ers could have sat on the ball three times (Falcons had three timeouts), following by a 45 second run off and field goal attempt.

This would have given the Falcons 22 seconds (minus field goal attempt) to return a kick-off and score a touchdown without any timeouts.

This play was the defining moment of the game. Not an Alex Smith interception.

You don't think an open VD would have likely caused Smith to throw the ball to him as opposed to forcing it to Gore? I'm not excusing Smith's pass, I'm just saying it takes a complete effort by all 11 starters for this offense to function. Even if you've never played QB in your life I'm sure you can imagine how much more difficult the job becomes if your receivers aren't doing what is expected of them.

The bottom line is still that good teams find ways to win while bad teams (niners) make just enough mistakes to lose. The niners have been killing themselves with mental mistakes for years now and there appears to be no end in sight. Yeah the talent is there now compared to 05 but the niners just keep beating themselves. I get the feeling that the ATL game isnt the last one this season we will lose on a last second field goal.

My point is still valid.

Had the 49ers not scored a touchdown and attempted a field goal, th Falcons would have had the ball with less than one minute on the clock and no timeouts.

The likelihood of a field goal reduces greatly.
