It has become predictable. Usually it is right at that time where you would normally start to relax, and feel like,"ok, they are starting to settle down and get it together".

As soon as I have that feeling, the thought pops into my head, "oh crap, this is usually when they f*ck up".
Alex has always been pretty good in 2 minute situations, with 3 WRs on he field, mostly in the shotgun.

everybody keeps saying the defense should be more helpful towards the end of the game.. the only thing that kept us in the last game was the defense...is it their fault alex smith couldnt score touchdowns and get first downs..and throw pics in the redzone? they blocked a punt and scored a touchdown off of it... scored equal amount of points as the offense, the defense plays well time and time again, but they cant do it for the whole game when they are constantly on the field...

Point taken but do you think Baltimore or Pittsburgh would blow those games like our defense does?

Bottom line, if the defense is going to walk around saying that they want to be the best in the league, they've got to make those stops in crucial times.

This. It's not just about Alex right now. But, if you're at it, he did come back 8 points against Saints. I don't understand how people can focus on the negatives and throw the positives out the window.
Throws a pick. But I hope he can pull what he did in that 2 min drive vs. NO

Both Baltimore and Pittsburgh have faster defenses than the 49ers. The 49ers seem to think they are faster than the actually are. Matt Barrows even mentioned that in his chat the other day.

The 49er defense is looked at as being fast because of Willis' speed but other than Willis, none of the others are on the same level. Lawson is OK and Spencer is a bit above average but the rest of the defense can't run with a Dexter McCluster or Reggie Bush or Roddy White. They just can't. Now add in the fact they can't rush the passer either and you see why the defense has cost 2 wins.

This. The issue is systemic. Certainly, we could use better play out of the QB position. But our most heartbreaking losses in the past couple years, (Colts, Vikes, Seattle in 2009 and Saints and Falcons this year), we had the tie or lead late in the game, and with all but the Colts, VERY late in the game.

Without one more point, the D could have won any of those games, and the "strength" of our team, didn't pull out any of those victories.

And that is IN SPITE of iffy line play, questionable offensive play calling and sub-par QB play across the board. If our D just steps up in those key situations, we are at least 10-6 and in the play offs last year, and should be 2-2 this year.

We need better play EVERYWHERE, not just at QB.

So, for Alex to be successful, he needs a top tier, O-line, a top tier set of Skill players on offense, AND a top 3 defense! Wow I think I could almost suit up with that kind of support!

Look at Bradford, Bradford makes that whole team better, his O-line looks better, his WR's look better, even his defense looks better playing with a lead! No matter how you slice it Alex was NOT worth the first pick over all, and is not capable of being a successful starter in the NFL.

And thats what many are not looking at. It doesnt matter if the D stops the offense the entire game until the last 2 minutes. If we are in the lead, then u know what matters most in the game, the D stopping them in the last two minutes. '

Just like we say at halftime, make any adjustments and switch up the gameplan if need be, well it's the same for the Defense. If you stop the entire game and consistently get beat in the final minutes than i look at that as a bigger problem, then stopping them all game.

How'd he do against the Seahawks?
Alex was not worth the top pick in 2005, but blame that on Nolan/McLoughan/McCarthy or whoever. But can he be a good QB in the NFL. I think with the right organization and surrounding cast, he could be. Not every QB in this league is great. The good ones are in short supply. That is why I am willing to bet that if the 49ers do not re-sign him, he will be signed by another team with the expectation that he will become their starter.
How can anybody who is thinking clearly be sure that Alex will throw a pick, or be sure that Alex will throw a TD, when his signature problem has been inconsistency?!
