I am surprised noone brought this up, but how about our pass rush?

People don't want to think about the pass rush being non existent; would rather blame everything on Alex Smith and believe if we had another qb this team would suddenly be completely fixed. Alex's gone now we have a pass rush!

Yea I gotta agree with you on this. It's like folks bought all the hype about the defense. Before the season the majority of ppl didn't care that they didn't upgrade the pass rush, or the cb positions. One thing they need to blitz more. I've never seen such a passive 3-4 scheme. NCcommand been saying this over and over that the OLB's on the Niners just aren't good enough to cause the havoc that we need them too.

Thank you! I've posted until I was blue in the face on this subject. How the eff do you run a 3-4 with two OLB with no pass rush skills or proven ability (save off the bench for 1/2 a season)? If Manny and Haralson COULD actually provide at least consistent QB pressures, Clements, Spencer and Brown could jump as many routes as they want and Lewis wouldn't have to be in coverage and Goldson could play inside the 15 and light ppl up!

My big criticism of Manusky is HIS inability to play something above a very vanilla and predictable base 3-4 and was hoping this year, he'd raise his level of exotics blitzes (see Jets) to the next level. He came out agianst Seattle and called the most vanilla scheme I've seen yet. Perhaps Jimmy Raye and Singletary are rubbing off on him? He's losing his San Diego influence.

THE primary responsibility of the OLB is to pass rush on almost every play en route to stopping the run, sealing off the edge and occassionally dropping back in coverage. Period.

At the expense of losing a little agianst the run (no big deal, most teams don't need to run on us anyhow) we need FT pass rushers out there bringing the heat every down and let Willis and company clean up the screens and intermediate passes while the QB is scrambling.

In short, make the opposition EARN a victory...lets stop giving it to them like we did up in Seattle. Had the defense been able to hold, the offense might have been able to get back on track despite JR/MS.

I've brought it up, if briefly, in several threads. In fact, both lines, rather than coaching or Smith, have been my primary area of concern this week. Unfortunately there were a lot of blitzes in Sunday's game and they didn't do squat. If I recall correctly, one of the disastrous CB cuts (Brown's?) was designed in conjunction with a safety blitz!?!?

It wasn't Manusky's finest hour, but I trust we'll see a better D against the Saints.

SANTA CLARA -- Linebacker Ahmad Brooks, who has not played since sustaining a lacerated kidney on Aug. 6 from a mishap with a blocking sled, should be available to play Monday night when the 49ers face the New Orleans Saints...but what kind of role Brooks might have in the defense is uncertain, 49ers coach Mike Sinlgetary said Thursday.

Singletary said outside linebacker Manny Lawson and Parys Haralson are doing "great" jobs in their starting roles. Backup outside linebacker Travis LaBoy recorded the 49ers' only sack in their 31-6 season-opening loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. (love this little stab by MM)

Generally, only three outside linebackers are used in a rotation during the course of a game. (why, when Brooks, LaBoy & Briggs are your best pass rushers?)

"It's going to be a tough call," Singletary said. "We just have to continue to evaluate during the week and see how it looks and what's best for the team." (really, what's best for the team?)

Singletary said the 49ers will consider their options at outside linebacker. But the starting jobs are not in question, he said. (apparently, Singletary doesn't know anything about defense either)

"We got to look at everything," Singletary said. "(But) Manny and Parys have done a great job. There's no reason to begin to look at them." (mind-boggling)

In all fairness Brooks is a situational pass rusher. Used on passing 3rd downs. While he won't bench Manny or Parys he also won't throw them under the bus in the media.

What pass rush? The same pass rush that was "3rd in the league" last year and didn't need upgrading according to many here? The one that piled up sacks against terrible teas but got zero pressure when it mattered, esp against decent teams? This defense is still Willis and a bunch of guys, although Smith is a solid #2 DE on most teams.
