Week 8 - @IND 14-18 We allowed Indy to convert on third and long late when they were backed up deep in their own territory. That blunder and some conservative play-calling, along with Staley's and Clement's injuries, helped lose the game for us.
Week 9 - TEN 27-34 We led the majority of the game, but we unravelled late. Hopefully this years team will know how to finish off games.
Week 11 - @GB 24-30 Our o-line didn't show up until the second half. But in the final 6:30, our defense couldn't get off of the field. It was one of those too little, too late efforts.
Week 13 - @SEA 17-20 We beat ourselves through and through this game. From two dropped TD passes, to a horrible special teams blunder, to a series of poor play-calling at the end of the game. I don't think we'll see any losses such as this one in 2010.
Week 15 - @PHI 13-27 This game was sloppy and we blew opportunity after opportunity. I think this was a result of the Seahawk loss and knowing we were all but out of the playoff race, which Singletary had promised we would be in for 2009.

What it all means

We suffered six losses by a score or less. In almost all of those losses, we beat ourselves more than the opponents beat us. Being a young and maturing football team, that was to be expected. In 2010 however, we're more experienced, more polished, more talented and even more hungry.

If you're doubting the 2010 campaign and an overall improvement in the standings, have fun on your island. This team competed with the very best last season and when it lost, it was in heartbreaking fashion. My money says other good football teams will be on the opposite end of those heartbreaking losses in 2010-11. Also, if we take an equal step, just as we did from 2008 to 2009, we should be +130 in scoring this year. That would mean we outscored our opponents by 8 points on average. With our maturing defense and offense, that doesn't seem out of the question to me either.

That is because Shaun Hill shouldn't be in the NFL and was the reason we lost early. 66-10 is what he was outscored by in his final six quarters of play. His performance was sinking our team and he should have never been made the starter last year. It was a terrible mistake that was incredibly obvious to me at the time. I know all the Smith haters thought otherwise, but it is now obvious just how wrong and clueless they were.

They weren't just Smith's fault. The whole team unravelled late. Anyone who is arguing that Smith didn't create a net improvement for the entire team last season at this point doesn't deserve to have a voice in the conversation.

The Eagles game was on Smith. Easily his worst performance since his rookie year.

The Titans game..he got unlucky on one of the picks (famous tipped int) while the other one was just JTO status. I wasn't too upset though because that was Smith taking risks (something he's NEVER done). Better to get it out now so you can figure out what you can do. Not an excuse but just an explanation. It's just the kinda sht that happens when you have "QB competitions" and share reps, no continuity, switching QBs and play calling mid-season.

Bottom line though: Smith can't take a dump anymore like he did in Philly. That one still hurts.

Smith's worst game last season was against the Eagles. But it wasn't just him. His first INT was a pass to Vernon Davis that VD didn't even make a play on! That game was disappointing through and through.

I think that's an honest indication that the team is almost there. We have close games with good teams, but not enough to beat them. The next step is obviously to win the close games and have more wins than loses.

it means that we still didnt make the playoffs, and thats all that matters
