Hey, baas never allowed a sack or hurry, but did have that one screwup. Maybe, just maybe, whether baas or heitmann, the secret to all this was having quality guys on either side of center, so they can concentrate on football, not on covering for the weak blocker on either side of them. I got a feeling when heitmann returns, he will look a lot better also...based on 3 very good OLs, all first rounders, playing around him. That was why i petitoned long and hard for drafting an OL, and predicted we would go 2 OLs in first rd. Looking at AD and poti, those guys are the real deal. They are only going to get better. And, benefit of benefits, they will make our C play a lot easier if the C only has to concern himself and not a guy on either side of him who can't block. Those days are over. Thank God.

I don't know about the future but a major reason the OL performed better last night was the same reason Smith was so much better; the plays came in with plenty of time to adjust to the defense. When the OL has time to settle in at the LOS and make certain of their assignments, they will do much better than when they rush up there and have to snap the ball in 3 seconds.

I think we should just keep Baas at center because he's better there than at guard....we should just bench Chilo and start Heitmann again at guard because he did a fine job when he played there in the beginning of this career.

If permanent is until someone better comes along...then yes. He's probably been the most consistent lineman this year.

Opinions vary on whether Baas or Heitmann gives us the best play at C...but, I do like Baas' size and toughness. You seldom see him get pushed into the backfield. If they're not going to play Snyder at RG, then why not Heitmann. He played pretty well at OG before Newberry's problems prompted putting Eric at C. For whatever reason, Singletary seems determined to keep Chilo in the starting lineup...but, he's just not progressing as he should. Another reason I want an offensive-minded head coach...one who recognizes shortcomings when he sees them and makes intelligent replacements.

So in 2034, our center will still be Baas?

While Baas has been one of the better offensive linemen this season, I still believe he is cut below Heitmann, who generated better holes in the middle of the defense in the previous years compared to Baas this season. The Niners continue to struggle running up the middle, and this was supposedly going to be Baas' strength. By this time last season, Gore had already broken numerous long gains, and TD's running through the heart of the defense. It just hasn't been the case in 2010.

I can certainly look past Baas' crazy snap against the Saints in taking the totality of his work this season. But, there is a reason Heitmann has been selected team captain for years now. He provides leadership, structure, and confidence for Smith, which is essential for our team's progress.

Let's face it, our offense stinks, and it begins with the OL. It is difficult to understand why the best OL on the team last year is riding pine in 2010 when there at least three linemen struggling, and two that are mediocre, at best.

I have to say that Heitmann has been a pretty good sport about it so far. I think I'd be pretty upset if I was the unquestioned starter at center, named team captain, and then, a week later, due to injury, not get a chance to get back onto the field when healthy....especially with this lineup. He probably should have demanded a trade if the team is going to stubbornly refuse to alter this horrific OL.

I keep tellin ya MadDog, saying Heitmann was the best OLman last year is a lot like saying cyanide is the best poison to commit suicide with.

And truthfully? He was NOT the best Lineman on the field last year. That distinction would have to be given to Sims who only allowed ONE Sack from the LT position.

So there is a better poison to commit suicide with.
