49ers' center Eric Heitmann injured

at least he's not out for the year, shoot. he'll probably only miss a few games

Wragge and Baas . . . time to step up.

It looks like he will miss 2 to 4 games. If losing Heitmann means no playoffs or we are toast like some on here are saying then that must mean we were not very good to begin with, The better teams overcome injuries and more to win games and make the playoffs. Personally I think we are better than that and will overcome this injury and others to make the playoffs.

Means he will have that much less strength and power pushing of his leg(s) and i thought he was never the same after breaking his leg late in 2006.

Ouch.

Looks like the Baas at Center fanboys might get their wish now.

Yeah, it's a big loss.

The only positive out of this is that the injury has come relatively early in the season. At least it gives Baas a chance to salvage his career. Although he's going to have to play very well to remain the starter after Heitmann comes back.

The fiblua is not a significant weight bearing part of the leg. With his old tibia fracture he was out for the season. If the ankle area is stable and the fibular fracture not displaced he could be back and strong in eight or less weeks.

just maybe this will be a blessing in disguise. Obviously Bass hasn't panned out as expected at guard as a high draft pick and he obviously has more strength than Heitmann so this could improve the running game. Best case scenerio is that he can pick up the line calls through the preseason and be ready for week one. I for one think that Iupati-Bass-Rachal is a very powerful middle 3 and could do well in the run game.

This news is huge - perhaps devastating. Heitman was the QB of the line, calling out assignments. His intellectual cotnribution was as much a factor as his physical contribution. With Baas, it may not only be a drop-off in execution, but we also lose a great deal of experience and leadership.

I am an Alex fan, but I can see that I may have to use this as the most recent excuse for him being unable to perform at the level I think he would otherwise be capable of. Alex really needed stability, especially in the line, to perform at his highest level.

Injuries are a part of the game. There are no more excuses for Smith regardless of this injury. Firstly, it's only for a couple games (hopefully just SEA but that's wishful thinking). Secondly, we could always make an excuse for why he hasn't performed.

It's do or die time for Smith no matter what this season.
