Well now, does this push the heitmann thread open once again.
No one wishes for injuries, but many of us didn't think very highly of Heitmann as a player. Many of us believed Baas, who was drafted as a center, is the better and stronger presence at center.
At least now, all doubts (hopefully) will be answered.

I dunno about anyone else but here is a novel idea. Put Iupati in at Center and let him own that position. Is it ideallyc? No probably not. But he's got the attitude and he gets off the ball at the snap without hesitation. If we're concerned about Baas and his "injury history"(I'm not but, meh
) then keep Wragge as backup @ Guard and give both Big Mike and Baas the reps @ Center and see if the kid can do it.
Just a thought since he plays Guard and so did Heitmann. I think that Ray could help him along here and this is the opportunity to look for Heitmann's eventual replacement. It would be much nicer to not have to be looking once E.H. moves on.

What? Okay Ceadder, I have all the respect in the world for you and all, but playing center is about more than just talent. You're going to put a rookie at OC who never played the position even in college? Really?
Ceadder's still lickin' the leftover mustache juice from last night's moonshine binge!

Did I not say work Big Mike and Baas into the spot? As much as I would rather have a veteran presence in the middle, it's not likely that this team will pick someone up given the length of time that E.H. is likely to miss.
So get that thought out of your heads right now. No way we pick someone up to cut them or at the expense of other positions later down the road. Not for a bit over 8 weeks of recovery time. That puts E.H. back on the field roughly mid October. If we were talking December then I would agree that's the way to go. But Heitmann will be out a quarter of the season or less. So now...
...tell me a better option. I'm on pins and needles waiting for the winning option. Making fun of a random thought doesn't solve sh@t. But I digress Mike would not be the first Rookie thrust into service @ Center. Didn't Jeff Saturday have to do it for the Colts? Look how that turned out for them. I'm not suggesting that Iupati is in that range of capability. But We have Ray Friggin Brown to help the kid along. The Colts didn't have anything like that to help bring along Saturday.

I think Eric has strengths at the position, but I also think he is "weak" in terms of physical power compared to most NFL centers. If Baas can take this opportunity and make the most of it, I think our starting O-line has the possibility of being better... however, we'll miss the depth. Also, if Wallace can't step up, this will be his last year on the team.. that is if he even makes it out of camp.

This injury concerns me.
I do not want one of our promising rookies to take on this role because they were drafted to fill immediate and somewhat glaring weaknesses on this team.
That said -- there's not a whole lot left in the cupboard.
Injuries are a part of football. This I know. But damn, this one hurts.

Is Cody Wallace THAT bad to not get some decent reps? If so, thats one helluva wasted of a draft pick. At least the dude makes a decent paycheck...b*****d.

Just like he always gets hurt. By being on the field.

Ladies and gentlemen, starting at center for your San Francisco 49ers...
Kevin Mawae!
He's tanned, rested and ready. Get him signed and let's get back to work. Problem solved.

At the same time, a lot of folks wanted Vann to make the roster and many are clammering for T. Mays to start right away. So, this obviously does not say much for the intelligence of many on the board.
Losing your team captain, the anchor or your line, the guy who MB declared today to be the 49ers best linemen the past few years, and the tutor for a very green rookie at LG is never a good thing. Especially to a journeyman interior lineman or guy who just lost his job to a rookie.
Cheers.

I came in here to say this. I think it would be a great idea. Sign him for one year, and then if Heitmann gets better they can battle for the position.
He'd be great as a stopgap, a lot better than putting someone in there that doesn't play center/hasn't played center forever.

Heitman was mediocre anyway. How many times last year was Gore stuffed at the LOS last year? Hietman doesn't have strength to be a run mauler like we desperately need at Center.
