I was thinking about this the other day, and I tried to play out the rest of the season in my head realistically, and I couldn't come up with a clear conclusion. I'm kinda on the fence about this one...
Oh and before u beat me to it... lol

Yea I was wondering that too... But would Smith have drove us back to a near win like he did in Houston? That Houston game sparked confidence in Smith. If he still got pulverised in the ATL game... would his numbers have been as good, and would he have been garaunteed a starter this year?

Hill still would've been pulled regardless. Starting with the Rams game it was pretty clear that Hill's limitations were starting to show and defenses just started to load up close to the line of scrimmage to stop the run game and shut down the short passes Hill is most comfortable with.
In Hill's defense the offense we were attempting to run didn't fit him at all so he was nearly doomed from the onset to fail.

You must be really bored to have concoted this thread.
But since you got my attention... I think that Alex would be the starter because even had we won that game it wouldn't have been because of Hill putting the team on his back. With Hill at QB, the offense was so limited that opposing teams could stack the box with 9 guys because there was no threat of a vertical game. Noodle arm just could not stretch the field at all.

Yes, Alex Smith would be the QB.
Hill wasn't pulled because of his performance against the Vikings. He was pulled because he got "figured out".
The Falcons figured out that they could use the Big Nickel D, load up the box with defenders and not defend the deep ball or the perimeter because Hill couldn't get the ball there.
When the Niners got down, they had no hope of fighting back. The Texans then employed the same strategy and the Niners were down 21-0 at halftime.
The issue here is that the league figured out how to defend Hill because he has some glaring weaknesses. The Niners were NOT going to be a winning team any longer under Hill. Thats why a change needed to be made and its the reason Hill was let go in favor of a backup QB whose talents resemble Smiths much more than Hills.
Bottom Line: The league figured Hill out. His time was done.

Good post. Hill was a gamer, a good leader, and did a fine job for a while, but he lacked the physical tools to get it done.

Shaun Hill was outscored something like 66-10 in his final six quarters of play. Smith should have started Week 1 last season. Had that happened, we would have beat the Vikings and not been embarrassed by the Falcons and Texans.

While I support Smith, I do not agree with this. I think that Smith needed additional time to heal his body and psyche. Hill did a decent job.

I don't believe he would have, he would've been 4-2 to start the season.

Alex would still be starting, our offense looked terrible every game hill started, with the exception of like 2-4 magical drives per game.
Our offense looked like it could do something with smith in there, even if he didn't always make the right throw.

To be fair, Hill wasn't always terrible. He was tough, but didn't have what it takes to lead a team deep into the post-season.
That last statement was the most accurate.

Agreed. Plus Davis came into his own and Crabtree showed up.

Doesn't matter, because today, Alex Smith is the starter.
