The thing about so many strong safeties in the NFL that most people seem to ignore is that their coverage skills are not up scratch and Mays is not really any different in that respect. What is different about him is his physical skills that give him a chance to make plays that other players can't. He has a chance to be really good and his drop in the draft should only motivate him to succeed.

I think he'd be a great coach. Just watching him in that segment you can see his ability to talk and mentor the younger guys.

I'd love for him to coach the secondary
I wish Ronnie Lott would of been there 1st

I don't think there is anything stopping Ronnie from asking to help coach the DB's. I'm sure the 9ers would love to have him on the staff.

I've heard on knbr he spends more time with his kids now that they are in high school and i think one of em plays football.

I respect Rod Woodson , I jus wished #42 was around Santa Clara as much as he is around USC practices and games.

Can't believe he went to the raiders

But our secondary coach is pretty good too. Hopefully our secondary really makes some strides this year.
old thread bump >.< I was almost excited for a sec.
Pretty sure Rod signed with the Raiders coaching staff to be an assistant to the coach for their cornerbacks. and yeah, he will be a good coach.

Rod Woodson mic'd up at 49ers OTAs w/the DBs. He mentions his thoughts on Taylor Mays towards the end of the interview. I personally think with the proper coaching, Taylor Mays will become a probowl safety in the NFL one day. Woodson seems to think so too.

I definitely agree with the emphasized above. The other major variable in this equation is Mays' development of his mental abilities, including toughness, endurance, and focus. Mays definitely has all the tools to become a strong player.

That would be awesome. He looks good wearing that 49ers sports jacket too. He'd fit right in with Singletary and the rest of our coaches.

But I don't think it'll happen anytime soon. Coaching takes up a lot of time, if not more time than the players. I'm sure Rod doesn't need the money, and working as a broadcaster is much more easy-going and less responsibility. That's why a lot of great players, who would no question make great coaches in the NFL, end up in broadcasting positions.. i.e. Steve Young.

its less stress to bulls**t about players that aren't yours! when you're a coach STRESS!

Just a side note, I can't see Singletary as a sports commentator, he was meant to be a coach.

I hated the Mays pick. If anything he's regressed since his soph/junior year in college. As a senior he was brash and arrogant, taunting opposing teams and fans.

People are blinded by the way Mays looks in a tshirt and shorts. As well his track speed doesn't always translate on the field. He looks very stiff at times and loses much of his speed when he has to change direction. He wasn't a playmaker in college and really struggles on making plays on the ball in the air. All his weaknesses seemed to only be highlighted last season.

I have serious questions as to whether he can play safety in the NFL. With his size and frame, he may have to look at adding weight at some point and moving to LB.

I will agree with Rod. I think he would know a bit more about Mays than you
