In the aftermath of a 49ers draft that was widely seen as a resounding success, the question has been asked: When are the 49ers going to promote director of player personnel Trent Baalke to general manager?
Baalke, 46, has seemingly earned the right to remain the team’s personnel chief. But don’t expect him to be anointed “general manager” any time soon.

I personally like the 3 headed monster of Baalke, Paraag and Tom Gamble. I think it could continue to work well.
Sometimes you get a big name GM and he has an ego and becomes power hungry and has problems with the coach, owner, etc, etc. This way everyone has a job and they can concentrate on what each guy does well, like Paraag with the contracts and #'s

I still don't know why this means they can't promote Baalke? Are they unable to conduct a sham interview

interesting. i think they should get a Rooney Rule exemption if they already want to promote someone in-house. no reason to do a dog and pony show just to fulfill the rule (although I know that sometimes candidates appreciate the chance to interview it as a way to get their name out there and to have practice for the process).
As long as we have clearly defined roles for everyone in the front office and all the tasks are managed I don't really care what they call him, though.

That and it is pretty obvious we are not a racist orginization as we have a black head coach in Mike Singeltary and Keena Turner has a high ranking front office job. Im not saying any NFL particular NFL team is racist but im just saying....

I kinda understand the rule, but really in cases like this it's more insulting than anything.

yeah. but like danimal said, there really isn't anything wrong with doing a sham interview, if the person being interviewed knows what the deal is and wants to use it as practice. it doesn't seem too difficult to stay within the rule and not waste people's time.

The 49ers should publicly request a waiver on the mandate interview. The reasoning being that the original GM resigned, and the promotion is through the chain of command, and not from someone outside of the organization.
Regardless, the 49ers should not be in a hurry to fulfill the GM spot. If Singletary fails in 2010, then the 49ers should look for new blood in the front office and coaching positions.

Rooney rule is stupid. Don't need it in this day and age.
