The screen pass hurts us, mostly because our defense is tired.
We led the league for most of the season (if not the whole season) in three n' outs.

When you're tired, thinking is even harder than running. You need to have a sharp head to recognize the screen coming.

So again, the solution is not to simply draft "el superman" on defense to save the day, but rather, to finally give Alex Smith the time he needs to keep the chains moving and hence give the defense the rest they need to stay sharp.

Yeah, I agree with this. Also, you have to put some on Clements being out and Michael Lewis's play. He's a strong run stuffer but I don't think he has enough make up speed when he sells out on pursuit. I think if we picked up a FS and brought Goldson into the strong safety, it could help.

why is everyone so gung ho about taking CJ Spiller. its like its just a big bandwagon thats snowballed based on hype. how many people here actually watched this guy in college on an every game basis? youre just falling in love with the hype.

our number 1 priority is OL. period. Spiller is a luxury we cant afford right now.

wed have to take Spiller at 13, if hes even still there. its just not worth bypassing need. without an OL, we go nowhere, even with spiller.

I would be fine with Spiller and I watched him play 6 or 7 times this year dude...

the DL have to be the ones to recognize it and stop it. Thing is, our DL NEVER gets a chance to touch the QB, so when they think they have a shot, they rush it. By the time they realize they were just set up for a screen, it's too late.

He will be long gone by the time we draft and I doubt the 49ers would trade up to get a running back, too many glaring holes elsewhere.

We are vulnerable, but I think that it's needless over pursuit by our Safeties. When you have a guy like Bam Bam there shouldn't be anyone on the ball carrier but him. Safeties should be the safety valve. I've NEVER seen 52 react to the wrong side of the play. So the Safeties need to recognize this and then hang back and clean it up should Willis not wrap the guy up, which imho would shock the hell out of me if he didn't wrap up. The man is a hell of a form tackler and even if he doesn't get you on first effort? OMG you're goin down anyway cause he's got quick hands.

There should be no reason we get killed by the screen.

On one side we have 1.Manny 2. Icebox 3. TKO or Bam Bam.

On the other side we have 1. Brooks/ Harralson 2. Smith 3. TKO or Bam Bam

That's before DBs' are even involved. Our OLBs' funnel everything in and our Middle cleans house. I think the only reason that we do get burned is because the Defense is playing more to keep us in the game than anything else. That should go down this season given that our Offense should be able to put more than 1 or 2 scores on the board. FG not included.

oops..sry..youre right...the original poster wasnt stupid....just wrong. i just hate it that people think spillers is gonna be our savior...like gore is lacking or something. gore is a stud, and chances are spillers isnt another gore...and certainly NOT better. i trust gore is better, plus i was wasted when i posted...i humbly castrate myself to restore my honor.

Sorry Ceadder but I gotta go with the Wubbie on this, Every defense has a weakness, and is open to certain calls PERIOD.

Conservative keep it in front of you defense is open to short passing and power running, also does poorly against the spread.

The Tamp 2 is has glaring holes along the middle seams.

Name a defense and I can tell you the weakness, if I don't know the guys on my coaching forum do!

Any 3-4 is open to power running at the edges, we compensate for that by using bigger corners like Clements who is a beast at contain and tackling RBs on the screen... this puts pressure on our safeties in deep passing.. and so and so on!

Every thing you take away on defense opens something else on offense... its called X's and O's! It is were Singletary is weakest, but getting better!
