According to this list, the Jets have a much worse pass-rush. Anyone want to argue the 49ers have a better defense than the Jets?

And if it were all secondary (problems) and nothing with pass rush, who needs to be benched and why? Who's the weak link in the secondary? Who needs to be sat down?

And please don't say it's "just the safety" because if that's true, we just need a safety and we should immediately be in the play-offs. Maybe I'm missing something but the drubbing but the Falcons and the Titans had very little to do with safety play. Watching McNabb run AWAY from Parys Haralson was hilarious. So again what's the answer?

So you're saying the secondary sucks? Well who is it? Let's talk about play for once.

Because if I don't give up a sack and there's no pass rush for 3 quarters and I score 27 points and you score 10pts, and I give up 3 sacks in the 4th - does that mean your defense is "good" and my pass-rush has arrived?

NOPE.

Defense wasn't the issue at all last year.
The problem is that way too many of you are equating a passrush with sacks. Sure the 49ers had good sack numbers, but there were just way too many games where there was no pressure on the qb at all. The only player on the 49ers who got consistent pressure on the QB last season was Justin Smith.
I would rather have 3 to 4 guys get 4 to 9 sacks each rather than one guy with 15 sacks and pay him $9 million a year.

Together these guys make more money than a franchise pass rusher. Also, these type of guys usually leave after a big season to go get paid somewhere else (Banta cain, Haralson, etc...)

Drawing parallels to the great 80s teams, the 49ers are essentially a 3-4 defense without Charles Haley.

The pass rush is going to be fine... They just need to be more consistent at getting at the qb... Last year they seemed to get their sacks in bunches in some games and none in others... consistency is the key... they'll be fine...

I would rather have a consistent pass-rush that applies pressure during critical times in a game, than lead the league in sacks.

Exactly. And why can't we have both? At least one dominant OLB AND great scheme that brings pressure from everywhere...oh wait, THAT sounds like a real, dominant 3-4 defense. Nah, we don't want that now do we esp. if these sacks and QB pressures can be applied at crucial times of games and actually dictate an offense for a change. Nah, we don't want that. Then our 9 years of building this 3-4 defense would be a success!

An improved secondary will put just the slightest hesitation by opposing quarterbacks and receivers which will in turn create more sacks. If we get a guy like JPP, Morgan, or Graham in the draft, then great. But please, please a RT and LG early.

If the top OT's are gone by the time the Niners select at 13th and Joe Haden is still on the board. I would love for the niners to grab him and trade back with there 17th pick and get a late 1st and a 3rd round probably(i dont know how the vaule charts work). And select Brandon Graham or maybe Kindle from texas.

Face palm....

No way all the tackles will be gone by 13. I hear this crap every year and usually the draft turns out just the opposite. Our defense is fine. Really, if we didn't add one player to the defense we would be okay. There are only 3 spots we HAVE to have and those were the spots that made us 8-8 instead of 12-4. PR/KR, LG, and RT. Period. If we got Haden and Graham, even though I love these players, I would puke. Our first 2 picks should be used on Williams and Iupati.

Our pass rush did produce at crucial times in some games, they won the Monday Night game for us.
good post these people are dumb
We did have a pass rush, it just needs to be more consistent. I think adding a new safety and getting Nate back will be a huge plus this next season!

We do have a pssrush. Yet our biggest problem is that we have to scheme pressure, to get pressure.

Usually we have to bring 5 people to get pressure that means that there is one less defender in coverage.

Also at times we are slow to get to the Qb which has costed some games ( especially the Vikings game). To be fair to the defence it was lost by the predictable playcalling and our ineptude to get a single first down in two posseisons, which would have allowed us to take a knee.

Also the Atlanta game at home was one where we did not get to the QB quick enough.

Passrush is part of the passdefence and we have to improve our passdefence dramaticlly beacuse the league has become a passing league.
I think our defense is solid and there is a pass rush, but it is more due to schemes, wouldn't mind someone who could sack the qb without schemes, a simple DE or DT getting the sack without the help of a blitz by the CB or LB.

We need to fix the OT, but I don't want us to reach either. This will be an interesting draft
and the Cards just signed Joey Porter.....
