VD has Smith's back

You know what anyone that had a problem with these comments are full of s**t. It's actually about time that our players completely backed one another. Say it's because of this, or because of that, but the point remains that they believe in Smith, regardless of what naysayers may say.

YOu saw it in willis, and now you see it in VD. Its that loyalty and devotion that may put us over the top. They now believe in Smith, and that cant do anything but help his progress to know they got his back.

I cant wait till Pre-Season.

This is Smith's make or break year he has to go into it knowing his teammates have faith in his ability to lead our offense. I'm not a huge Smith supporter but I also believe if somebody doesn't perform Coach Sing is not gonna sit on his hands and watch another season go down the drain. I just can't wait for us to get back to the top Lets Go Smith put in Work!

Didn't Vernon say the same thing about Rachal next year too? He has very high expectations for 2010

If Peyton were told he would run a new offense handing the ball off to Frank Gore, except in obvious passing downs, where he would take the snap under center and drop back with an inferior line and WRs running the wrong routes...you don't think this would impact his game? The difference is that he has been allowed to grow and learn in a successful environment and has the confidence to tell the OC where to go. Smith has had the opposite experience with the 9ers and only next year will tell if VD knows what he's talking about. As a fan, I can only cross my fingers and hope!

I don't know why we are assuming that Manning is the best QB in the league....or why we are assuming that he ever was. You can't say that he doesn't need a supporting cast when his entire career he's been surrounded by some of the top wideouts, RBs, and the top offensive lines in the game. How often do you see his guys drop a ball? How many times did Marvin Harrison pull down a ball that shouldn't have been caught? Have you ever seen a game where his line breaks down a bit and some pressure gets to him? He's a statue and when the pressure is there he doesn't look nearly as good.

Sure he's a talented player, but let's not get caught up in the hype. If he were forced to learn a new system and have a new top target every year......well things wouldn't be so great for him.

The primary difference I see between Payton and Alex is that Payton aggressively reads defenses and tries to react to what they're doing, while the reverse seems to be true with Alex - he doesn't seem to read defenses and they react to him instead (i.e. read his eyes).

As a case in point: Payton's last interception in the Super Bowl was an anomaly and not the norm.

i hope so, and as long as he keeps feeding the ball to VD!!!

Exactly. And if VD has Smith's back, how about not committing stupid penalties or drops at crucial moments.

12 penalties + 13 drops = the most combined pen./drops in the entire NFL by a MILE.

his blocking has also gotten sloppy and uninspired since he came out of his offensive shell. when it comes to TE, VD only really does a small portion of the job well. just so happens its the portion that makes you famous, and gets you into pro bowls, but for all the TD's he caught, think of how much he cost this team backwards due to dropped passes and costly penalties.

is he really as big of an asset as everyone thinks? not until he starts playing fundamentally sound TE. technically his dropped TD in the endzone at SEA cost us a playoff spot. not saying wed have won it all, but all he did for us all season didnt really matter when he dropped the most important ball.

one can only speculate but.... think of all the good/half decent throws dropped that were thrown by smith....maybe he would be around 22-25 td's... and im pretty sure people would be saying to give him a chance with 10 games 22+ td's let alone 18...

It's tough to catch passes in the stands. Smith might've had more TD passes if he wasn't so busy throwing it out-of-bounds and running to the sideline.

As far as one of the best QB's...that would be cool, but would be a big leap. We haven't seen any big leaps in Smith, just incremental growth. I just hope he plays consistent & keeps them in games. They have the playmakers around him, so Smith doesn't need to get too crazy out there being a risky gunslinger. Turnovers are a real killer for a team that is still trying to find itself, and not very good at coming from behind in games.
