Larry Allen

i agree that big bully guards are one of the keys to a sucessful running game i like chilo rachal he improved as the season went along david baas is the big disappointment he was the 1st pick in second round he is in his 5th year and still he is not a bonifide bully at guard we need a younger verision of larry allen that why i want a davis from rutgers at rt 1st round and bully og as 2nd rounder big samoan from idaho seems like a good pick up

Believe or not I really liked Justin Smiley! not intimidating size wise like Allen, but Smiley was a DOG! He was tough.

certainly it is not time to gamble with unproven draftees.sign a veteran monolith of a guard and or tackle through free agency as priority 1. only then will an honest evaluation on smith b possible. imagine what gore could do with holes bigger than that of swiss cheese

We definitely should have kept him...McCloughan doesn't like to pay OG's s**t though....looks as though the 'fins aren't having a problem running the ball

Wow... not sure where to start with this. You want to draft OG with 2nd and 3rd round picks because you don't want to wait? Rachel and Baas were both 2nd round picks (39th and 33rd respectively)... so not only were they NOT 3RD ROUNDER PICKS... they were both nearly 1st round picks. In fact if I recall both were considered to be the best or second best guards coming out of college - dominating at the college level against top tier opponents.

While your points regarding the value of OGs and Larry Allen is a good one, don’t think for a second that a OGs from the draft will be an instant upgrade over the Rachel and Baas, but that’s just plain ludicrous.

I thought there were many booboos by the coaches and McCloughan. First off the squad showed major foulups in personnel and contingency planning of pretty profound errors IMO. I think some have been addressed by the search for a tight end and new OL coaches but the play calling and inept designs and inoppurtune plays and just poor tactics caused a lot of problems. I know McCloughan is set in his ways but the major problems IMO was the interior line at least thru a good part of the season. The fact we have addressed Fullback and looking hard for a tight end says something. Those areas were ignored thru incompetence of hard headed stupidity. I think if they do improve those areas, they need to absolutely change the playcalling dynamics and maybe let Alex call the plays. IMO those late plays coming into the huddle were no great feats of genius in the first place and hurried plays caused as much problems as inept plays. IMO a play called early allows a QB to envisage the play thoroughly and have things straight. If Simpletary is to show that he is not a dunce he needs to make positive changes there and ass kicking strong changes. I think the strong fullback and tight end blocking will help a lot on the tackle situation but breakdowns inside compounded the tackle problems.
IMO we do need a tackle but even moreso a dominating guard and center and in fact we need multiple interior guys. I think if the interior is strong the running will improve and tackle problems dissipate. However the McCootyville mantra of ignoring top guards says he always will stink and soon be gone.

We just need to bring in someone who is tough and physical. Like Derrick Deese and Kevin Gogan back in the day. Jonas Jennings was a mauler when he wasn't hurt(which was a lot). I want a guy who will get mad when someone hits his QB. Our line right now doesn't have a guy that will get in the face of an opposing player.

linemen like Allen don't come around very often.
