There are not really any big name FA's that would have made the team better now, with or without mortgaging the future salary-wise, and the few that are/were were paid WAY more than they are worth and more than they would have been paid on the FA market in previous years.

It's not like they don't sign big name or highly sought after FA's. Jennings (even though it didn't work out), Clements, Justin Smith, Lewis, were highly sought after and the 9ers went out and did what they had to to get them. Aside from Jennings and his inability to stay on the field those were all quality BIG signings. I'm sure if there was a guy like that they wanted right now they would have tried to go after them. Not saying they would be crazy and do what Chicago did with Peppers or Washington did with Haynesworth last year but that is a good thing.

How would bringing TO in for a hear help with the growth of this team? What is embarrassing about not signing a nobody they bring in to talk to (especially when he re-signed with his current team)? It's not like we know what the 9ers offered him, if anything.

You don't overpay for guys just to overpay for guys, that makes you the Raiders.

Your problem is YOU WANT TO HATE THIS FRONT OFFICE and your mind will make up whatever it needs to to justify it.
Most FA aren't worth what they get paid. Franklin & Smith were 2 good ones. Franklin took 2 years before he produced at a high level though.

Wait a minute everyone knows that you build from the draft and fill quick fixes through free agency. Our team is building it's talent the right way. Look at all the teams that build with quick fixes. They go to the playoffs or just miss the playoffs everyone talks about how great they'll be next season and by the end of next season you forget all about them.

Example everyone should be looking at is the Steelers....They rarely if ever0 make a big FA splash. They try to resign their players and build with the draft. Next example would be the redskins....They spend money left and right(this year seems to be a little different) and they suck every year..

would you rather have the track record of the steelers or the redskins over the last 15 years?

Agree 100%, its easy to say spend spend spend, we all want a winner, but its not our money. Plus the niners are on the right track. I think if we were a player or two away then it makes sense to go and grab thru FA or trade. Good examples Russ Francis, Fred Dean, Dieon Sanders. However, we are only on the cusp of making the playoffs and not a perrenial playoff team yet.

Still, I know not how the this years lack of a CBA and if one gets done for next year will affect the overall scheme of things. Like the bonus will not be prorated this year, but what if they say next year, that the bonus will be prorated again and that 2010 will come into that equation or not.

It's not my job to know all available free agents nor do I care to take the time.

It became your job when you started this thread.

We easily could of picked up a proven WR and RB at a reasonable cost. We need help at both spots. Morgan is not a number 2 and Frank is often injured. Look what Thomas Jones was signed for (2yr 5mill) Are you F'n' kidding me? How about looking at bring TO back. The guy is probably still better than anyone we have, including Crabtree. It's ok if guys dont want to sign, but we should at least be in talks.

Look at the embarrasment of Becth. We bring in a scrub TE for talks and he turns around and sign with his old team the Cards even after we say we want him. What a joke.
How about not holding on to Pasho and maybe losing Simms? What's our back up plan.

The point isn't we aren't even trying. Go on, keep drinking the Kool Aid. The Yorks love fans like you.

you act like free agency is over

I will happily retract my post if they prove me wrong.

P.S my original point was never that we should be signing "big name FAs", it was that I was tired of hearing/reading zoners quote McNugget that we can't sign FA because we need to sign our guys. Thats it. Sorry so many of you have to read into it.

No time to proof read. I'm at work...

So why not wait until the season begins before criticizing them?? The NFL is a business and that's the reality of it. Why wouldn't they treat it like one? To please fans like you who want them to break the bank for the sake of spending? Even the largest market teams like the Cowboys are being conservative. Besides, this year's FA market is horrible!

The original question posted is a valid one and it proves the point of why we shouldn't go on a spending frenzy:

You actually think it's an embarassment that we didn't sign Becht?

Someone should be embarrassed for starting this thread.

Thank you Dr. Phil, but you are sadly mistaken. To the contrary, I've said I'm generally happy with the direction of the team. Is it a problem that I think they can do better?
The problem with too many people on this board is that they are always thinking about the future to the detriment of the here and now. A perfect example is your take on bringing in TO. You said, "how would bringing in TO help the growth of this team?" As if all that matters is two or three years from now. I'll tell you how he would help, by challenging the young guys and showing them what it means to compete. How about helping the growth of this team by catching TDs and helping us get into the playoffs? The same can be said for bringing in a good vet running back. We have the money, it would make the team better if not more secure, so why not?

As far as using Clements, J.Smith and Lewis/Franklin as examples let me give you my quick take. Lewis and Franklin dont count as we got them on the cheap. What I mean by that is they are not an example of "doing whatever needs to be done to win." Lewis was a second tier FA and Franklin wasn't even on the radar. He just as well could of been the next K.Mitchell (who?). Exactly.
Remember that at the time that we signed Clements and Smith we where horrible, horrible. I mean we got blown out like nobodies business on defense. You could make an arguement signing guys like that wasn't designed to make us champions, but only competitive as we haven't done squat since then.

I hate being the negative guy on the board, as I'm really not as down on the team as it sounds. It's just that some of you got on these rose color glasses as if this was the Niners of old. You can't even point to our record as proof.

I do. Based on all the articles the Niners talked this guy up. We wanted him, but some how couldn't close the deal. Let me guess, he wanted to much money....

I just dont get how some people cant see the potential that our players have. People need to have faith in the players we have. We are building something special.

Or the difference wasn't enough to uproot from Arizona . . . either way it's much ado about nothing over a guy who wouldn't have even been guaranteed a spot on the final 53 man roster.
screw anthony becht and all of the cards we dont want or need any of them!!!!!WE OWN THE CARDS

That doesn't count around here. We need to sign overpriced free agents to take the playing time away from our young guys so they will never develop. Otherwise WZ mad!!!!!
