Where do we begin, Yorks taken over, firing Maraucci, hiring Nolan, the list goes on and on.....

Hang on, Yorks taking over? Why did they have to take over and what was the alternative.

Way too much sh!t talked about the
Yorks on this site. The foolishness of Eddie DeBartolo forced that situation.

Last I checked, we were a wining team under Eddie Debartelo. I don't care who owns the team, but you have to admit, since Yorks took over it has been nothing but down hill!!!

Well, last time I checked it was Eddie's fault not the Yorks.

How so? We have been a losing team since 2002. Who has owned the team since? Its all about wining.

Here's a rundown of what happened in the 90s.

A) The NFL adds the salary cap for the 1994 season. The 49ers, wanting to beat the Cowboys, spent up to the cap ($34.6 million at the time). The 49ers won the Super Bowl that year, but it was pretty much bought (even the team has admitted that).

B) Throughout the rest of the 90s, the 49ers were consistently at or right near the cap. This prevented them from signing key free agents. As a result, the team got old and they couldn't replace them with younger, better players.

C) In 97, Debartolo's name came up in the corruption case of Louisana Gov Edwin Edwards. Eddie payed Gov Edwards 400k to secure a casino license. As a result, he was fined by the NFL and barred from the team for a year. As a result, he gave the team over to the Debartolo Corporation (who actually owned the team, since Eddie Sr purchased them). The whole spat between him and his sister starts and he loses control of the team for good.

D) The 99 season happens and Young goes down in Arizona, and the 49ers season totally tanks.

E) Walsh is brough back in by York to restore the team. He does a good job clearing the cap and building a decent team after the 99 disaster, having the 49ers back in the playoffs by the 2001 season.

F) Walsh steps down due to his wife having cancer and had set Terry Donahue up to replace him. Under both Walsh and Donahue, the Yorks left the football decisions to them (that's key).

E) Donahue fails to sign TO to the long term contract he wanted, and signs a bunch of players to really bad contracts (like Ahmed Plummer). Mooch is fired after the 2002 season and Erickson is hired as the new coach.

F) Donahue totally guts the 49ers roster and Owens leaves.

G) York finally grows a pair and fires both Donahue and Erickson and hires Nolan (who does a good job with the personnel on the team, he just couldn't coach them).

That's pretty much what happened. Had Eddie not been stupid, he wouldn't have lost control of the team (that's on nobody but him). The 49ers bought that 94 Super Bowl and paid for it during the 90s with all of the cap problems they had.

Have the Yorks been perfect, hell no. However, they were really green when they took over so they left the football decisions to the football people (Walsh, Donahue and Nolan).

For me the worst mistake SF did during the past decade was not draft Aaron Rodgers. However, I am not trying to turn this into an "Alex Smith" post as much as hate the fact Rodgers is not a Niner. With that being said what does everyone else think as far as the worst mistake during the past decade? Either something we did or did not do. The other one for me was hiring Coach Dennis Erickson.

Like Rodgers would have flourished with crud coaching, no O line and no targets

I mean seriously whatever QB we drafted to that situation would have sucked. Why dont people get that?

If Alex Smith was a Packer and was doing great than all you smith haters would be all over his D.

no hate here but when i was watching this draft....if we would've drafted Rodgers 1st overall...Alex Smith would've been selected within the next 5 slots...10 the most!

as we know....Rodgers fell out of the top 10 and was a 24th 1st rd draftee....

im happy with Alex Smith!

Giving a DC with no HC experience the position of HC and GM.
Hiring Dennis Erickson, no doubt
