I am starting to think Sing (coach Kool-aid) and Raye are to blame. With help from Forester, they combined to create what could have been the most ridiculous running game and simplistic pass protection schemes. The thing that will hold Alex back, and the rest of the team for that matter is the kind of coaching that runs up the gut even when facts show they can't, the kind of coaching that has 25% of all it's running plays thrown for a loss yet makes no changes to the play calling is not the type of staff that will propel anyone to the top 5 of any list you want your name on!

Could Alex be a top 5 QB? Maybe but not o with this coaching staff.

This is a bunch of writing that throws in the face of the fact that Smith has his BEST year as a pro under this coaching staff. The fact is that they had to run those plays up the middle to keep the defense honest. Otherwise, Smith would have gottem even more preasure. This coaching staff actually COACHED Smith.

It's going to take more than a flash to justify his #1 pick status. But what amazes me is that you want to chastize the coaches who basically revived his opportunity to even start and coached him to his best performace as a pro. These coaches have forgotten more football in one nap that you, I and Smith will ever know, yet you want to attribute Smith's glimmer of success solely on Smith? This is the reason why some fans do not like Smith. For it is folks like you who make him up to be something he has not even come close to becoming. You blame everyone else for his short comings; but give credit to no one else for his growth.

We stupidly placed Kory Sheets, our skat/change-up back on the practice squad while keeping three similar types of running backs (Gore, Coffee and Robinson) IN addition to Moran Norris. So all three of those backs specialize in running up the middle, not to the outside. So it's no wonder that we were going 70% of the time up the middle and defenses were waiting for it. It's a testament to Gore that we got any significant yardage at all. So now we still need that skat back...will it be Spiller or possibly Reggie Bush?

A revamped offensive line will definitely help as would a guy like Spiller falling to us at 13(which I'm not sure if going to happen yet). Hopefully our offense with have a little less transparent than it was last year and it will be catered more to the ability of the players and not a system. Field position will help Smith a great deal. All the pieces are in place and now it's just up to Alex. Alex has to work on mechanics and get more reps with his receivers.

the only thing hes lacking is an OL. every great QB must have an OL, and i think this area will make or break Alex's career with the Niners, whether its his fault or not.

Oh I feel you bro, I am not a big time Smith guy. I think one of the big reasons he showed any signs of life was the SIMPLICITY of the offense, unfortunately the simplicity lead to the predictability of the offense.

And yea I know these guy know more than me, but I can still see what I see....

Another big issue with having backs that only go up the middle...the play action is not as effective. Say Alex rolls left or right on a play action and the defense can eliminate the possibility of a run to the outside...they will guess that it's more likely than not a pass so they can drop back into coverage instead of biting in and letting receivers or Vernon get behind them. We REALLY need a speedy back who can sweep wide or hit the perimeter like Chris Johnson. That...is what I think would help Alex the most and force opponents to respect our run game even more. It'll make Frank more effective too. It'll be a domino effect.

I'm not too optimistic, but if we picked up someone like Brian Westbrook and he could stay healthy for at least 1/2 the games, play him sparingly, imagine our backfield! Gore and Westbrook, the perfect compliment to each other.

Probably very rough to change QB's [mid-season], change philosophy [mid-season] run to spread/ shotgun,change blocking schemes that were implemented in training camp.Now at [mid-game ,Houston, mid-season ] scrap the whole plan ,and start a new play book that you have to insert new pages every Monday morning and by the next Sunday afternoon look polished.
