I think that will be Ray's personal project, working with Chilo Rachal.

Watch Alex Boone at RT on the Nate Davis highlights. I may not be a football expert but he looked pretty darn good to me. He rarely got pushed back and was pretty good pass blocking. His footwork seems pretty good in that he seemed pretty square to the pass rusher most of the time. I think he could do pretty well as our ROT. On the other hand Barton and many of the interior guys were getting beat pretty regular.

I hope we can develop Alex Boone. The kid has some raw ability! Before his off the field troubles at Ohio State, Alex Boone was a 2nd to 3rd round draft pick on some draft boards.

Well, a bunch of us have called for a real OL coach, and hopefully Solari is that guy...I dunno, one way or the other. The fact that bigMike wanted to keep Foerster, however, was disturbing, because that tells me BigMike didn't know he had a guy coaching the OL who had flat failed, fallen on his face, and our HC was ignorant of it. That is not promising. HIring Ray Brown, after a one day meet tells another story...two of them actually. First, Ray Brown is the real deal, he knows the OL. Hopefully he can coach it. I would bet he can. Second thing the hiring tells me is something i have posted many times, and that is, with bigMike's singular lack of DC, OC, OL, DB, RB, Qb, and finally HC experience, he is way too short on experience to be a great HC. Learning on the job is not my idea of an ideal HC.
In addition to not being where he should be on Xs and Os, (and that is a must in NFL), bigMIke is also short on contacts. Why? Well, he was a LB coach at Ravens for what... 4-5 yrs. Honestly, guys, with a DC above him, noln, that just isn't a great way to learn how to coach football. Besides that, bigmike doesn't know all the OCs and DCs and HCs and all the asst coaches, because when he could have been learning coaching football at the asst level, he was giving motivational speeches. In fact, he met Ray BRown , liked him, but bigMike never positioned hiimself to know all the assts and DCs and OCs in the nfl, because of his previous career choice. And learning all his coaching from noln...well, what do you expect?
Am i glad solari is coming? you bet. Am i glad Ray brown is here? you bet. It is just that other HCs know the league better than bigMike, and consequently he settled on a man he knew, jimmyrae, as his OC. We could have done better, tho don't get me wrong, i am grateful he didn't resign the HOSE.(hostler). I fully expect our OL to get better this yr, but have no idea how much can be done with what we have. Bigmike is also short in drafting and draft knowledge, again due to previous career choice. Sooner or later, if you take on a job that you weren't qualified for , it is gonna bite you in the backside. Personally i have immense respect for bigMike. I think he was an extremely poor choice for HC. Obviously he came in at a Godforsaken time, and really helped this franchise out. But to keep him as HC...that was a reach too far. Welcome Solari and BigRay. Please help our HC learn about every position, starting with the coaching of the OL. Then he needs to go on from there.

Bitter much?
So what, he's not an X's and O's coach. That doesn't mean Singletary can't be successful.

Doc you know I respect you and you are certainly entitled to your opinion(s).
But your post requires me to ask, just what experience do you have that qualifies you to critique
an 11 time NFL All Pro middle linebacker (the QB of the defense),
an NFL Hall of Famer,
an extremely bright and charismatic leader with tons of football experience, both as a player and as a coach,
about (a) his knowledge of football in general, (b) the NFL in particular, (c) the mysterious science of "x's and o's," and (d) football talent and the draft?
Your post simply makes you sound, um, pompous--and I know that's not what you intend and that you're not that way at all.
There should be a way to ask the questions you ask and raise the issues you raise without making it seem like a personal attack on Coach Singletary--a man you profess to admire--every time. I'm not saying the guy's perfect, but he's certainly more qualified that any of us to do the job he's got, and there have been others like him before who have succeeded, even with OTJ training.
How about backing off a little on the Coach, give him another year before you start calling for his head. He's been on the job for a season and a half, has made his share of mistakes, but appears to have learned from them, and has shown more ability to develop the talent on the team in one year than Nolan did in, what, 5 years? The team is fun to watch once more, and even on the road, seems like it has every chance to win--how often could we say that in the last 5 years?
Lighten up, look for the positives (but don't ignore the negatives), and join some of the rest of us in looking forward to more good things coming the Niners' way in the not to distant future.

Ditka had only been an assistant coach as well with Dallas and wound up taking the Bears to the Super Bowl in 3 years. *Shrug* It could happen. But I'd hope Singletary would finish with a more positive legacy.

Tulini, oldniner, don't get me wrong. I hope with all my heart that bigMike comes thru. What i am most concerned about is lack of adequate training to be where he is today. He will be a hero to me if he takes this team to the promised land. Problem is i have been watching true greatness in the playoffs, and it is depressing to compare our HC with those guys who made the playoffs. Yes, a team makes the playoffs, but the Hc gets them there. I can only look at Payton, childress, Peyton manning(OC), bellicheat,Whisenhunt, heck even Ryan of the jets, and be envious.
On a second matter, my apologies for not being more positive. I just have this sinking feeliing in my gut...another yr, same ole, same old. Honest to gosh, i want to be wrong. I was early on a big fan of scot til he flamed out and proved to be just a scout. From there it just kinda rolled downhill. Looking at our progress since mooch got fired...well, it is better to just forget it and get on down the road. But thinking back 7-8 yrs, it just brings tears. Unfortunately, i became a 49er fan when bill walsh took over...and frankly got spoiled by the GOAT. I guess we are destined to just be what we are...and led by whoever is put in place by the owners. But there again, that is just depressing. Ah heck, it's time for a beer...that'll lighten me up. Thanks to both of you for the advice.

I'd rather have Singletary over Brad Childress any day!

Okay I'm feeling MUCH better about the prospects of our Line being addressed now.
I was happy with Solari, but to me it was starting to look like a band-aid cover up. Not that it was but on the surface of it, it could have been one of those lets just hire a Coach and things will be better type deals.
But Ray Brown knows the Walsh blocking mantra and knows how to implement the McKittrick plan that Solari is going to be teaching this group. I don't think that we could have done better short of bringin Mack out of carbon freeze and hiring him.
Dwight Clark is already making his presence felt. I bet he's "the few people" in the league that Sing has been consulting.

You're a very gracious man.
I don't believe I've ever read a more reasonable response to a very poor attempt at constructive criticism (my post).
I sincerely apologize if I offended you in any way, and I congratulate you on your willingness to consider what I wrote, even those things that were, to my regret, overly blunt.
Unlike you, I am not in any way depressed in comparing Singletary to any of the coaches of teams who made it to the conference championships. Singletary still has some things to learn, but has shown himself to be flexible, willing to learn and change. Give him Payton Manning at QB and see how far he takes the Niners.
Will he succeed in the end? I sincerely hope so, but like MM, I think its too soon to tell.
I will say that I enjoyed watching the team last season (with the possible exception of the Atlanta debacle) far more than the preceeding seasons. We saw real progress, albeit with some bumps and some temporary setbacks. And unlike previous seasons, the real problems are no longer being ignored or overlooked.
The OL problems have been exposed for all to see, and have begun to be addressed. There appears to be a continuing plan to address the QB position, and we are stronger than before at DL, OLB, and WR (including TE) positions that were perennial weak spots before. And whether its "great" or not, we can at least look forward to some continuity on offense for a change.
So have a beer and hang in there. I'd buy you one if I could. And thank you for being so reasonable and intelligent in your response to my ill considered post.
