he deserved it. 100%. best DE in the NFL this year imo.

congrats to Justin Smith. now every 49er that shouldve gone has gotten a spot.

...really?

You think Justin Smith was a better DE this year than guys like Jared Allen and Demarcus Ware?

Smith had half of his sacks in one game. Jared Allen had half his 14.5 sacks in two games. Jared Allen plays a DE in a 4-3. Smith is a DE in a 3-4. yeh if he isnt better hes as good as Allen.

Ware is a 3-4 OLB. when has he been asked to hold up blockers for his ILBs?

As a 3-4 DE, Justin Smith has been OUTSTANDING. There is no denying that. He deserved it.
5 probowlers should be enough evidence that our OC and QB are not very good. The talent is here folks.

Ware isn't a DE and and Allen doesn't play the same DE spot Smith plays in. JS plays in a 3-4, he's usually taking on 2 players all the time. Allen plays in a 4-3 with the Williams wall in the middle and Ray Edwards on the other side. Big difference. For Justin to get the hits+pressures+sacks he did as a 3-4 DE is tremendous.

leave it to you to turn a thread about one of our defensive players going to the pro bowl into an alex smith bash thread

Ware is an OLB first off, and yes, Smith was better than Jared Allen this year.

its not all about sacks. Smith plays a position where rushing the passer is even harder. he has to take on the OL with less help, yet he posted better overall pass rushing numbers than Allen did.

6 sacks, 16 qb hits, 44 qb pressures for Smith. 66 total.

15 sacks, 14 qb hits, 35 qb pressures for Allen. 64 total.

32 tackles for Smith, 27 tackles for Allen.

2 penalties for Smith, 4 for Allen.

34 stops for Smith, 33 stops for Allen.

Smith also performed alot better vs. the run and pass than Allen did.

15 sacks look fancy, but Smith was the more effective pass rusher, and from a harder defensive scheme.

Sweet. This at least shows we finally have some talent with getting 5 players in, especially with 3 starters. With some consistency in the offense and Alex Smith hopefully improving, we're a good draft away from the playoffs.

We had talent before they were voted in to the Pro-Bowl. Getting voted in to the Pro-Bowl does not make a player better.

Justin Smith is one of the top defensive linemen in the league regardless of Pro-Bowls.

Frank Gore is one of the top 5 running backs in the league regardless of Pro-Bowls.

We are a good team almost everywhere except RT, maybe G and QB.

Ask the Vikings if a quarterback can turn an OK team into a contender.

If we had Brett Favre, we would have had just as good a record as them. We are very similar teams except the Vikings found a one year solution at quarterback. After Favre leaves, how good do you think the Vikings will be? About as good as we are right now.

Not at all. Our receivers would not have played as well as the Vikings receivers did for Favre. Crabtree, Morgan, and VD dropped passes all year. How do you think they would have done with Favre launching one at them? Also they have faster receivers, and because of that there were significantly more big play opportunities for them. That and their o-line could actually pass-block occasionally.

"Justin definitely presents the most problems for me. It's just his strength. ... He's the one guy out there who I can clearly say is stronger than me. It’s crazy, especially when he moves down into the three-technique (tackle) and plays over the guard. He's hard to deal with. Honestly, I think I played him pretty decent in the first game. The second game, he got the better of me on a couple of them. When they hand me that ballot, I'm voting for him."

This has been a long time coming. Our most underrated player, and the guy who makes our defense click. Our DL would look completely different without him, and would go from good/great to below average.

pro bowl players are spread pretty evenly this year
2 offense
2 defense
1 special teams

But I agree OL is our biggest issue.

9 sacks for the year, so close to becoming our first 10 sack artist in so long. Kudos to this beastly 3-4 DE.

The drawbacks of the Search Function = Zombie Threads.
Just think what Justin could do with a dominant NT and a more studly LDE...I'm hoping those are two positions addressed in the draft/FA.
