Does Nate Davis get to compete this offseason?

Davis' pocket presence is better than Alex's.

Until you see him in a real game you can't tell.
Marcus Maxwell, Thomas Clayton, Glenn Coffee, Kory Sheets lokked like allpros in the preseason.

Our running game looked mean...

More very good points I left out of my post.
Sure, against Shaun Hill.

You know what. I understand it is the off-season, but I have never seen one player who played "good" in pre-season get so much hype. Granted, ProFootballtalk.com and Donovan McNabb like what they saw in him as well, but lets not go too crazy here folks.

This is my last year giving Smith a chance, and guess what? Its the 49ers last year too, because its Alex's contract year. So if he doesn't perform any better then he did this year (which he played pretty well), then I think its going to be Nate Davis vs 2011 Rookie QB in training camp that year. Give the guy time (Nate Davis) before we all claim him as the future.

Im right there with ya. But give Davis time, let him develop and sit and learn. Are you serious, dont forget this is the zone. If most had their way, he would of started in the beginning of the season ahead of Hill and Smith.
Have you learned anything from the Alex Smith saga? Let Nate Davis continue to learn the playbook and develop his footwork/mechanics. Let him step up when he's ready or out of necessity.
The NFL is weird in the way the politics work. Every team pays scouts millions of dollars to look at these kids and in the end it is all based on luck.

What I mean is we wouldn't even know about Tom Brady or Kurt Warner, if it weren't for injuries to Bledsoe and Green. Same goes for Favre, if he was sitting at the end of Altlanta's bench he would have just been another guy but he got traded to Green Bay and the rest is history!

The politics go like this: the investment comes before the talent, the guy with the bigger contract or highest draft status wins! Unless a coaches hand is forced (injury or upper management nudging the coach "see VY WITH TITANS").

My point is all of these things get in the way and after the millions spent on scouting players no one ever really knows what is going to happen when the guy steps on the field.

We as fans are just as knowledgable as the scouts that passed on Tom Brady 6 times! There is a lot of luck involved, and we will see just how lucky we are when Davis takes the field, or we will see how much we don't know if he becomes a legend in another uniform.
no
The front office is scared Nate Davis will outperform the #1 overall pick.

From what Ive seen, Davis is a lil slower on the move than his counterpart Smith. Ive also noticed that Davis has a stronger pocket presence, standing his ground under pressure, stepping into his throws, etc. He'll be our starter by midseason 2010.

Ya, Alex Smith is 0-2 in QB competitions

You sure have a lot of confidence in a quarterback that doesn't even have confidence in himself!

For sure hehe
Yawn.

Another QB thread.
For all we know Nate Davis could be the next Joe Montana waiting in the wings. With that said, it's not about how good or terrible Nate Davis is to me. It's about Alex Smith in 2010. We need to pretend as if he is the franchise QB, surround him with talent and protection and let him shine or flop on his own merritt. It annoys me that after 5 years we still can't come to a consensus on Alex. It's clear the orginaztion is behind him, so as Steve Young said, if thats your choice then we better be prepared to get behind it. No more competion this year. He needs all the snaps he can get.

The one competion I do hope to see however, is between Nate and Hill. I hope by the end of traing camp Nate will prove to be Alex's primary back up.

No Hill should be gone, Davis needs to compete with Clausen or some other rookie... for the back-up role, Alex love him or hate him is our most NFL ready starter!

If I was Sing I wouldnt rush Nate Davis, we have a situation here where Nate can sit another season and absorb the system and sharpen his skills, and I will bet he will be ready by year #4 and have the confidence to utilize his skills and be an effective NFL Qb ...Lets not rush the kid, he's still growing, even though he has shown some flashes of being a playmaker in pre season and appears tempting to play him, but throwing him into the fire will only do more harm then good.

I prefer year three. However, like other quarterbacks they should be given chances in real games. So let Smith show his thing then after 8 or ten games see what happens. If smith flops or is no better than this year then let davis get in there under favorable conditions. a la Brady, Montana etc.

Especially if the niners manage to pick up better linemen and etc.
