CAN BUST FINALLY BE REMOVED?

If Alex was a bust, he wouldn't be a starting QB in the NFL, PERIOD. Let alone a starting QB for a team that went .500.

When he couldn't beat out Hill for the starting spot there was no question he had become a bust.

The guy was selected #1 overall, he lead an 8-8 team to five wins during his forth year in the league that is no accomplishment for a qb drafted so high.

That's just crazy. Smith had the better arm in training camp despite the fact that it is still not 100% from the injuries. The HC decided to go with the starter from the previous year and let Smith sit as he hadn't played in two years plus Hill had won games as a starter. Once that filed to happen and the team went on the decline Smith was given the starting job.

My opinion:

Vernon Davis - Yes

Manny Lawson - Yes

Alex Smith - pending year

Getting bang for your buck considering the specific slot they were drafted? Nope, we got ripped off.

Very good point...

Obviously he has the stronger arm, but there's a lot more to being a winning qb in the NFL. He had over two years to heal so you can't use injurys as an excuse for him not winning the job. Hill a 3rd stringer, beat out the top overall pick in 05 straight up. Hill looked better than Alex during the preseason & his teammates and coaches had more confidence in him. That made Alex a bust in my book at that point in time.

I think we panicked in terms of benching Hill we were only 6 games into the season, its crossed my mind if we had stuck with him we might have snuck into the playoffs.

Nope Frank would have ran the ball 3 times , then we would have punted . Hill could not spread a defense out at all. And Crabs would have been a waste also.......

worst survey design evar. you lumped a no-brainer response option with Vernon Davis into the survey, forcing everyone to ignore the real "bust" question in Alex Smith. Alex Smith has done nothign better on the field than Tim Couch thus far in his career.
Vernon, Manny, and Alex are not busts. You can offically remove the label from Vernon and Manny now. Vernon is a Pro Bowl starter; Manny led the team in sacks and played well. Hopefully Alex can remove that label next year.

Busts still end up starting in the league when they have no business starting at all.

Examples: Kyle Boller, JaMarcus Russell.
Vernon... no. Never thought he was. He have stone hands, but basically provides an additional lineman, which is huge. He is just now getting utilized properly.

Manny, I am not too sure about yet. He improved last year, but this year would be key.

And Smith, well, I think he needs at least one more year to determine if he can improve. None of the imfamous "alexcuses" apply in 2010, therefore according to the Smith supporters, he should succeed...

Alex helped his case when he took that paycut
yes on all of the above. They are now not even close to a bust....Smith is good considering he had NO OL to block and his best wr was a te. Wait until Crab and the o line gets better and he will not only cease to be considered even close to a bust but probably a pro bowl qb

there it goes...another smith-hate-thread.

yeah, right...hill is a franchise qb.

6.5 sacks isnt a huge argument for a 3-4 olb, imo. but the bigger problem is parys...didnt improve in 09 at all and i dont forget the important missed tackles.

Boller only started because of injuries, he was never seen as a "good" QB anyways, so i'm not sure if he is a bust, or could even be considered a bust. The only person that thought he had any potential was Brian Billick.

Ironically, JaMarcus Russell can't be considered a bust yet. He has only been in the league for a couple of seasons. Yes, he has looked lazy, and downright awful at times, but he could still flourish under the right circumstances (probably not with the Raiders). Furthermore, he might not even start this year, for the Raiders. Yikes.
