Total team sacks ranking (tied for 3rd)

Thats is pretty amazing considering not one player had double digit sacks. I still think the team needs a dominant pass rusher and hopefully it gets addressed in the next draft.

I don't think our pass rush is as bad as some make it out to be, but we did get 18% of our total sacks in a single game against a really bad team with nothing to play for.

Thats a damn good secondary if you ask me; with the outside linebackers we have. It says a lot has to do with coverage

Agree - they came in bunches and that's not good. All of those above who rely on stats (such as being 3rd) clearly don't watch the games. There are many, many times where we fail to generate consistent pressure (3rd downs particularly). We need to improve in this area.

Although they had pretty good pressure against the Vikes, we need to be able to get more pressure with 3 and 4 man rushes...

Birdman is right. We have been inconsistent. Like in the first half against the Jags we had 0 and 6 in the second half. Some games 8, others 0. It would probably be better if we didn't have so many in one game and spread those 44 over 16 games and not 10 or whatever.

Steelers against Oak : 1 sack
Steelers 2nd game against Browns : 1 sack
Steelers against Packers : 1 sack

Not to mention that that defense has been together for awhile, and have former defensive player of the year in Harrison, and another great pass rusher in Woodley.

And they are the top sacking team in the league...but you don't hear people complaining about them...seriously you guys need to watch more football before posting stuff like that. It's almost impossible to come out every week and do what you do best, even Peyton has a weeks off, even Brees has weeks off. We've only had 1 perfect team in the history of the NFL (not counting the old NFL teams) that has had a perfect season.

But, I guess unrealistic expectations, are the only thing expected in Niner land. No wonder so many teams hate our fan base, because most have no clue wtf they are talking about.

Spencer and Brown played well. Personally, I think our DBs are very good and imagine how much slower the game will be for Goldson going into his second season as a starter and defensive leader.

Even the best defenses have those game where they can't get to the QB, our defense is fine and will play faster next year.

We need more speed on offense. A shifty and very fast slot receiver/KR would be perfect along with better Guards.

This is a great point. It certainly is a huge step up from last year though. Next year we will need to be consistent and not disappear collectively in games. We let some really crappy (and good ones) QB's and WR's look like HOFers against us at times this past year.

We need to get a bonefide starter at OLB, a ball-hawking FS, more consistency at CB position and perhaps get some speed next to Willis. I'd like to see some developmental depth at NT (prototypical NT), a focus on getting off the field on 3rd downs, a focus on coverage in the middle of the field, Brooks starting and Haralson and company helping in the pass rush on obvious pass rushing downs, etc.

The biggest thing I'd like to see is for Manusky to take a page out of Dom Capers book or the Jets to get more creative in his blitz schemes and NO MORE prevent defense. Period. That single-handidly lost us the season. I'd also like to see him use our physical corners more...to be physical and tight up at the LOS and NOT playing 20 yards off the WR on 3rd and 3. I'm SO sick and tired of seeing that. He won't play tight until we're backed into our own red zone to which, no shock to anyone here, they played very well.

I'd also like to see an emphasis on short yardage and goal line stands and on screen play defense. We need more team speed and team tackling - a focus on winning one-on-one battles. We still have a long ways to go before we become a dominant defense but at least WE have improved and know what areas we need to improve in!

Compare that stat to our 2008 defense, we only had 30 sacks. Which tied for 16th in the NFL.
