We've allowed 33 big plays so far

Not surprising. Opposing QBs often have 300+ yard games on us. While Spencer has played well, both our starting CBs going down has hurt us.

IMO Spencer would've started over Walt too. I'd take Shawntae over a 35 year old Harris even if healthy. But we need a speedy reciever on the other side or a safety that can cover. IIRC this is more big plays than last year with Roman at FS, but obviously this year Goldson's made more plays than Roman ever did.

On that one Jackson reception where he got 59 yards, you could see they tried to double him with Bly and Lewis. But he just ran by both of them. If Goldson could play SS and we got a FS, or if we got faster SS, we'd have a rangier secondary and that'd help. I wouldn't mind Joe Haden or Patrick Robinson though, they both seem like shutdown guys.

I think Lewis is far worse in pass coverage than Goldson is. I think Goldson has actually been pretty good on the back end.

I've got a explanation. Alex Smith. He lets those opposing WR's run wild and doesn't generate any kind of pass rush. Cut him.

Agree that Spencer has done a great job this year. We really need more speed in the secondary & someone with speed to take over for Mchael Lewis. He gets killed in pass coverage all the time.

Our defense isn't good enough. I think this points to not having a pass rush or a speedy secondary. If our secondary was fast enough, they wouldn't get burned so much. If our pass rush was faster, the secondary wouldn't have to cover so long. It goes hand in hand. But we have some good defensive players, but our defense isn't "there" yet.

How many big runs (say over 20 yards) have we allowed? Probably right up there in the top of the league. Bottom line we choose to stuff the run and make people beat us through the air. Michael Lewis and Roman are a big part of the 300 yards per game these QBs are putting up. Adding a good FS and moving Goldson to SS would help tremendously. Adding a guy like Joe Haden in the draft would help too. Move Bly and probably Terrell Brown down a spot on the depth chart and make us better.

Edit: Just seen the link and we are more middle of the pack for runs but we have faced a lot of the NFL's best backs and I bet 2 or 3 of those came from Chris Johnson.

I agree, we need to upgrade pass rush to allow less time for downfield routes to develop. Also, maybe upgrade SS since Lewis has been a victim of several concussions. We could use a speedy coverage CB from the draft, too.

Arizona has 29 we kicked them twice and they win the div

Goldson tackles way too poorly to play SS especially in this defense. where you see Lewis down in the box at times making tackles. we all know Lewis can't cover but he's a pretty sure tackler and that's a huge part of the game for this team. Goldson wouldn't do as good of a job. Point blank this team needs a real SS and leave him at FS, All this let's just moves guys over here stuff isn't gonna work.

the niners have one of the slowest secondary's in all of football. Brown has some speed but is out of position too often to be reliable. Look at the guys right now playing
Lewis- super slow
Clements- slow
Spencer- average maybe
Bly- average
Goldson- average
Roman- slow
Brown- faster than the rest

True and don't forget how slow our LBers are in coverage as well...at (1) reading the place esp. against RB's & TE's and WR crossing routes and (2) speed in general (Spikes may be the slowest LB in the league and Willis is ALWAYS trailing the receiver; heck even Lawson has been poor in coverage this year).
