He was the best QB last year...but that isn't saying much unfortunately.

Alex Smith at QB is in itself a reason to panic. Everything else going on just makes it worse.
this !
X3
I hope you're right, but the way it looks right now with the team alone, it looks scary
Agreed, right now its real scary. Cutting folks left and right, talking with all the free agents and making no type of moves. So disappointing.
Then the excuses will be that Alex has a decent QB friendly coach, but doesn't have a supporting cast.then another 10 years of Alex Smith??
I still hope that coaching is all this team needs to succeed, but with all the new holes even if Kap starts the season whoever is QB is going to have it rough.
Alex will prob get the blame if we go 3-13 this year, even if he posts an 85 qb Rating. and 20 td 10 int ratio.
I hope everything he said this offseason wasn't just talk, I hope he brings it, because someone needs to..
-Not gore, will prob get injured again.
-Not Glasstree because once he gets back, he will prob fake another injury.
-Not our oline, because at the moment its worse or the same as last year.
-Not our defense, because we pretty much lost everyone we used to b***h about.
So this is the time for a Qb to put the team on his back.... (starting to wish we had picked up VY now...)

That is saying much, because now we finally have offensive minded coaches that'll put Smith in the best position to put up points!! Agree?

The second I start to see threads like this is when I know it is time to panic.
we should have panicked when A center don't want to sign with his team that is offering him same money as the other team , an re signing the same s**tty qb from 6 years !
When did we offer Baas the same amount as the Giants? He got paid top 3 center money...I highly doubt we offered him the same.
We didn't. No way we would pay him that much money.
Baas had ONE year without being injured - last year and he's now getting top 3 center money. No one sees the problem with this?
I see only 1 problem...the fans acting like the world is about to end because we aren't willing to over pay free agents. I personally like what our FO is doing. While it hasn't fell in our favor...I think they are doing a decent job. We are trying to make moves but it's just not working out. We cant force teams to trade us players and we can't force people to sign with us.

We really have only been hurt by the Bass loss, but was he a top three center (reported value of new contract ) and the inability to get a Cover Corner. Harbaugh needs to rebuild this team in his image and I think he can and will. Bill Walsh came into an organization in the same flux and lead a new mindshift with the players he had, I am willing to see how our boy Harbaugh does, I for one think he has the personality to make these guys believe ! We need to make some smart mid level signings at Center, CB and Reciever . It's early boy's lets sit back and see how we handle adversity still alot of quality players to be had.
1)we have glaring holes on defense
2) we have a 1st year head coach
3) a new offensive system ..again
4) a star reciever who's always hurt
this is the perfect time to panic!

The phrase "Show me the money!!!" is on the cell phones of every NFL agent right now. With Harbaugh being a new coach in the league, you don't see him jumping the gun and committing a lot of money to players he doesn't know yet. Interestingly, you don't see Baltimore with his brother giving out big contracts either.
The Niners were burned by the Clements contract and understandably don't want to repeat that disaster again. With a somewhat small cap this year, I can understand wanting to be careful with their dollars.

I knew this was going to happen and even stated as much in my "weakness of the front office on full display" thread I posted on the first day of free agency.
But I was called a hater and the mods deleted my thread.

I seem to remember Carmen Policy overspending us into the trash bin awhile back. WE don't want to be in that position again, so this FO is really doing a very good job.

Yes, this is past the time for panic. Time for despair.
The most depressing sign is that players just don't want to come here, like the Niners are a quarantined ship. During our Super Bowl years, players took less money to come here. Now they won't take more.
We'll have to build through the draft (shanghai) because that's the only available route.
Where is this coming from? What player said this? Why parrot stuff that's not proven at all? Players follow the money. I want to see the deal - the guaranteed money. It's going to be more than Joseph who was OVERPAID.
It isn't all money--as I noted during the Super Bowl years when the Niners got guys like Deion Sanders, Rickey Jackson, etc. who came here for less money. Players, particularly late in their careers, often look for winning teams. Players turning down the Niners has gone on recently such as with Kurt Warner. Now we apparently offered more than the Jets for Asomugha's services to no avail. As someone posted in another thread (about players not wanting to come here), Nnamdi has already earned his money, he wants the chance for a ring.

Lord-GodAlmighty- Free agency hasn't even officially started where guys can officially sign until tomorrow, and yet there's this mass criticism about "what management has or hasn't done."
The analysis is a joke because we're not even finished with the the signing period let alone haven't started training camp. It's just sad. Sweeping generalizations are being made and only 33 players of the 80 top FA have been signed.
I really thought our fans were more observant than this. I really did.
Maybe I was wrong.
You aren't the only one who feels this way. While I don't fault anyone for being concerned considering our track record with the past HC and FO...This is getting a little over the top. I don't mind being concerned but I find it sad that a lot of these people are just plain ignorant. People don't realize we lost Baas to top 3 center money. We would have brought TKO back but we weren't going to offer him the terms that he wanted. Everyone we have lost or cut is because we weren't willing to over pay for something they didn't value as much as other teams.

then another 10 years of Alex Smith??
