People are panicking because THEY don't know the options, plans, coaches opinions about players, what agents are really asking for (in terms of deals) and how that would affect everyone on the team.

Just wait.

We have been waiting for 12 years...and still this team is mis-managed...

lol...submit your resume for the job. I'm sure being an arm chair GM would impress them. I understand why people are being negative but this is a whole new coaching staff and FO. Give them more than 1 f'n week.

...and you're probably gonna wait a little longer. So what will you do?
IF the Niners don't sign anyone of the "top" free agents, it really isn't the end of the world. However, if they don't then sign guys like Chris Carr, Richard Marshall, Malcolm Floyd, Olin Kreutz EITHER, I will be pissed.
Yes, this is past the time for panic. Time for despair.

The most depressing sign is that players just don't want to come here, like the Niners are a quarantined ship. During our Super Bowl years, players took less money to come here. Now they won't take more.

We'll have to build through the draft (shanghai) because that's the only available route.
Kreutz would be great, he fills a need, the rest of the line anchor off him.

Alex Smith at QB is in itself a reason to panic. Everything else going on just makes it worse.

this !

X3
Alex will be our rock, he will take the wheel, and lead us to the promised land.

I hope you're right, but the way it looks right now with the team alone, it looks scary

Agreed, right now its real scary. Cutting folks left and right, talking with all the free agents and making no type of moves. So disappointing.

Then the excuses will be that Alex has a decent QB friendly coach, but doesn't have a supporting cast. then another 10 years of Alex Smith??

Smartest post all day.

I just want the team to fill the obvious holes on the team with solid guys who can start.

Thanks GM.

Just to reinforce where free agency stands so far......only 33 of the top 80 are signed.

I have ZERO expectations for this team. We have holes all over the roster at this point. Hopefully some good coaching can keep us respectable this year..

The second I start to see threads like this is when I know it is time to panic.

we should have panicked when A center don't want to sign with his team that is offering him same money as the other team , an re signing the same s**tty qb from 6 years !

When did we offer Baas the same amount as the Giants? He got paid top 3 center money...I highly doubt we offered him the same.

We didn't. No way we would pay him that much money.

Said they were not a big FA player and, though they made a stab, they kept to their word. You see this as a problem? They haven't spread rumors about going after big names, that has come from NFLN and other media sources. Not a fail.

They were not actively going after Spikes and didn't want to sign him long term, while SD was willing to do so. Not a loss but a smart move for the long run.

Baas was an over committment by NY, not a fail.

Smith was a given because they did their homework months ago.

How on earth do you know they were preoccupied with Nambi? You trust NFLN (Lombardi)?

They have locked up everyone they could except for Goldson and he is an unknown. Goldson was riviled on this board, but you think this is a fail that he is still up in the air?

They are bringing in a ton of young guys and Harbaugh needs these rah-rah highly motivated guys to use as building blocks. Many of the vets may be less willing to go through the change in styles and rebuilding. The past eight years have given the team a black eye in the league, limiting FAs willingness to come here.

So we need to adjust our expectations until Harbaugh and Baalke show that they know what they are doing. If the team becomes exciting again FAs will follow.

Again, my issue isn't agreeing with what they have or haven't done.

It's that based on what they said prior to the off-season, they are doing one of three things:

1. Going against what they said was "their plan"

2. Failing at executing "their plan"

3. Getting caught off guard and having to change "their plan" on the fly.

So, either they were lying (putting up a smokescreen if you want to think positive), about how they would approach the off-season, or they are unable to accomplish that plan because of their own miscalculations.

One way or another, they do not seem to be achieving, or really attempting to achieve, what they put out there as their game plan.

And my point is that they have been sticking to their plan as stated. They have not signed guys who are being overpaid, not signed big names to rediculous deals, and are trying to sign their own guys when possible.

You are assuming they are lying because they lost two decent players, Baas and Spikes, and haven't shored up areas of need with overpaid FAs. I see that as a plus not a negative because it means acting maturely, not knee jerk (which I feared they would do).

Dude, that's the same story every year.
Am I the only niner fan that thinks Alex Smith will be the best QB in the NFC West this season?
It seems evident that the Niners' tactic is to build through the draft. There are some major pieces that are falling out, which will equate to another less-than-stellar season. But we know what that's like. Another draft (NT, CB, WR) plus the maturation of our O-line and Kaep should significantly improve our team. The only problem is it will take a year or two...

I'm still confused about the cap situation though; as I understand it, we are still SIGNIFICANTLY under the cap floor, so we HAVE to spend money. Any thoughts there?
