3 years ago this would have been a "coming out game" for Smith. LOL.

In all seriousness, I dont know if Smith is the unquestioned future. I DO think he is the starter going forward and I am very proud of the kid for over coming all the adversity and finding a way to make it happen. I just want Smith to carry this team and deliver a win. So far he plays good enough. I want him to play great. I thought he played extremely well in Seattle and Jacksonville though.

Anyway go 9ers.

If he can pull off a win against the Eagles, I think the criticism will pretty much dissapear.

alex could throw 5 td's in a game and somebody in here will be saying he sucks because he didn't throw 6

And when "somebody" says he sucks, a bunch of other people will come in here whining about any critique at all given towards the player, even if it is valid, unbiased analysis of what he needs to improve on.

J/K, but there is a lot of extermism going on on both sides of this topic.

One thing he needs to improve upon is to stop throwing towards one of the leagues top Safeties.

Either Smith or Jimmy Raye need to design something better than throwing to a VD or Delanie while being covered by Adrian Wilson. Our TEs are good but Wilson is not easily beat.

If Smith threw less at Wilson, his numbers would have been VERY VERY good.

The only other thing is that him and Crabtree really need to work on their timing.

with 4 games left i say he throws for 9tds 3int, that will finish him at 22tds 10int in 10 starts this season & will put him at 41tds 41int going into next season in his 6th season.

This is defintely Smiths coming out year, and it shows by the numbers... 19 total tds in 2005-2008 regarless he was injured, and has 13tds in 6 starts this season.. amazingg, and a reason to believe in Smith again!!

Enough with the statistics. The main statistic that counts is Win/Loss.

While from a statistical sense Smith has shown improvement, where are the wins? Sure it's not all his fault, but if he wants to run a spread offense, then he's going to need to score more than 10, 17, and 14 points a game in order to OUTRIGHT win.

I agree. Take the 17 at Seattle. After he throws the ball in the end zone he can run down and catch it for Vernon and Delany too. Or maybe after he hands the ball to Frank in the 4th quarter with the game tied at 17 he can run down to the Seattle 20 and recover the fumble. That would help him put more points on the board. He needs to do more.

By the way, the 10 was an OUTRIGHT win. And here's a couple of numbers you left out: 21 in the second half, 27, 24, 20, and 24.

I agree on both points.

I still don't have a good feel for how much of the Davis deal is his lack of ability to run more complex patterns and how much is Raye's lack of ability to design plays that get separation. I suspect some of each.

I am very excited to see what can happen once Smith and Crabtree have had enough time together to get their timing down. I remember how much after-practice time Joe and Jerry spent back when Jerry was a rookie. I recall a conversation where Joe said something along the lines of, "he is so quick that I am often late so I compensate and then I am early, then I wait and throw it harder and it goes high, etc., etc."

I think Crabtree is just special. That catch he made last night for the touchdown was terrific. That kind of catch will give both Raye and Smith more confidence to move on to more complex patterns and even greater results.

Wilson is a monster and actually a very underrated player.

He is very good but not under-rated. He has multiple Pro Bowl picks. He just plays in Phoenix, Arizona, not the media capital of the NFL.

I say he is underrated because to me he is the best safety in the league. Yes, better than Reed.

I'll take either one of them and not worry about drafting a safety next year.

Agreed, except for the J/K part.
Just a stat I saw just now on ESPN Live:

QBs with the longest streak of at least 2 TDs per game this year:

1st - Drew rees - 5 weeks

2nd - Alex Smith - 4

Damn....nice......
Is it just me or does Alex seem like he has a bit more zip on his passes this year. A lot of his passes seem to be crisp spirals down the field. Either his shoulder surgery did him a world of good, or it just seems relative after watching Shaun Hill throw...

It's probably both.

Big kudos to Alex for that.

He really has come a long way. Its quite the story actually. It would be cool to see it as a half time special when we are blowing someone out in the play offs in the near future (next year of course).
