sadly accurate.

WOW. I can't believe some of the comments here.
Balmer has been playing very well in the past six games or so. He hasn't been getting a LOT of playing time because the starting three have played so very well but losing him out of the rotation is NOT a good thing.
Really? I haven't even noticed him when I rewatch the games. I'd rather cut him and draft someone else. Guy has done absolutely nothing to impress me. He produces like a 6th round pic
Even when I make an effort to look for him he does nothing that stands out. Justin Smith makes you notice him because of his play, makes an impression every game and almost every play which is what I think a first rounder should do. Will Balmer eventually become a good/great player? Maybe but he hasn't justified the pick so far, especially when a starting wr/pr/kr combo player(Desean Jackson) would have helped more than a second string lineman that couldn't break into the starting lineup. For better or for worse, those two will be forever linked here in the Zone.

I just want to punch Scotty in the face. This is the worst pick EVER!
Do you read any of Maicco or Barrows articles that mention Balmer, or any of the other posts that have noted his specific play?
To repeat, it has been noted by professional observers that when he comes in to give a break for a DL that is now considered one of the top 5 in the league, THERE IS NO DROP OFF. If that means he is a bust to you, then you need to watch more football.
DJ. I think we understand this but this pick will always be evaluated against other picks and their performance. However, the logic is still flawed and ultimately a bad pick. There is something not quite right with 49er personnel eval. Why do I say that? Look how long it's taking players to make an impact - and some are a complete detriment. It's not just happening to a few players here and there but it's happening to entire drafts of players. Yes the 49ers have the most starters from drafted players, but who's starting and how good are they relative to other players in the league? Sure Balmer may not have any drop-off from Franklin but Franklin has only been good during his contract year (surprise, surprise). I wouldn't say Franklin has been an indomitable force eating up blockers, freeing LBs to rush the QB at will - no, neither he or Soap has ever been that type of player.
I'm just not one of those fans who get excited over a player's production after 8 or 9 games - or even one season. I would like (for once) to expect at least 2 consecutive seasons of solid, reliable, good play. The only players drafted who fit that mold are Gore, Willis, and Staley.
Ah now the rubber meets the road. This year proves only that those who've just started to produced can produce. That's just the beginning - that their draft spot may not have been a fluke. Honestly, the jury is certainly still out IMHO on Davis, Smith, Morgan, Hill (Jason), Rachal, Balmer, Baas, Snyder, etc etc etc..... (the rest of those drafted). I can't honestly declare any of these players as "arrived" until they do it for at least 2 consecutive seasons.
Just 2.

IMO, when you compare Balmers primary mission which is to go out and occupy blockers and Deseans which is to score touchdowns via WR/PR/KR, it looks like a waste of a first round draft choice simply because of the impact both players roles have in a game. Unless Scot saw Balmer as a gamechanging, playmaking destroyer of offenses, which is not his role in this defense, Jackson was the way to go because of our need for his various talents. Can you imagine how many games Jackson would have changed for us from day one?

I like your thought process. As good as Franklin is if he were doing this for another team the, majority of people would be against signing b/c he's having a good year in his contract year. there is a thread about giving Smith a new contract already. to me they resigned Haralson too soon which is why he doesn't appear as hungry this year. when i say consistency I'm also meaning for more than just one year, or a few games.

I don't think we'll see virtually any impact of his loss, which is a problem.
While nobody doubts that he adds something to the team, and can still make some noise in the league, this draft pick goes down to this point as a massive disappointment. Teams don't draft first rounders to be situational role players. They draft them to be starters, and impact players for teams.
In that Balmer has not been able to secure a starting position, or even appear to be in line for a starting position, this pick is a bust to this point. There are so many guys drafted around him that start for their teams, and are making MAJOR contributions. That is not the case with Kentwan.
Now, he could emerge as a solid starter in this league, but to classify his performance and standing in this organization as anything but a disappointment would be inaccurate.

It is never a good thing when you are somewhat educated about College prospects and you have to ask "WHO?" after your teams 1st round selection.
Seriously, this is a huge strike on scotty. I mean at least know where you can get guys, cuz balmer most likely would have been around on the next pick
I'd heard of him, and I didn't see a prognosticator having him lower than the first round with a few as early as the low teens. Almost all reports said he had physical talent, but he probably could have used another year of school.
For two years people said "wait 'il Sopoaga sees the field", then when he did they started saying "bust!" When we signed Franklin, people said "who?" and hen all through the first and second year they were saying "waste of money", and then his year, suddenly he's a possible franchise player!
Linemen don't get a lot of attention. People like Justin Smith are freakishly talented exceptions. Balmer was called "raw" when he came in. Give him time. As he masters the techniques of the position, we may yet see his talent emerge!
They say only 60% of first rounders pan out. Scotty hit on Patrick willis. He hit on Vernon Davis. He hit on Joe Staley. That's 50% of his 6 first round picks. What about Manny Lawson? Maybe not the pass rusher they hoped for, but he's a productive starter. Frankly, that would have to count as a hit. Alex Smih looked bad for quite a while, but these last few weeks, he too is starting to look like a hit. That means that if Balmer DOES flop, Scotty's hit on 5 out of 6 picks. But I suspect you'll see Balmer will end up being a pretty decent player too.
Does anyone remember us giving up on first round flop Ted Washington about a gazilion years ago? He went on to be a star elsewhere for about a decade and a half!
