Their situations are pretty close and look like they are playing out in the same way. Will Smith ever put up the kind of numbers Brees is? Probably not, but hopefully his career can take the same path and the 49ers can have the kind of success the Saints have over the last 2 and a half years. IMO it is already happening (this team is real close and should be very dangerous once it all comes together).

I never said it couldn't happen. I'm just saying that how Brees became good wasn't because he sucked or was benched. His play and mentality kept him on the field despite the fact that the organization wasn't behind him. The organization kept looking to replace him but he kept fighting them off. This personality holds a lot of weight in him becoming the player he is today.

Alex couldn't fight off replacements and from Singletary's mouth, he's too passive. This does not mean Alex won't succeed but it is a big difference from WHY Brees became a top QB as compared to why Alex, if he does, will become a top QB.

Brees put up a fight and won which is what great players do. Alex didn't put up much of a fight and kept losing until he got things catered to him, which isn't really the makeup of a great player.

That's why their paths are completely different. If you wanted to say both of their organizations doubted them, then that's fine but you can say that about almost any QB such as Vince Young.

In 08' he was on IR with complications of the same shoulder injury before the season started. In 09' he had an injury to a finger on his throwing hand or the last preseason game and the Arizona game. Alex Smith, the starter, has never been benched. I know it sucks when facts get in the way of a good story.

Comparing his stats and scenario through 4-5 years. Brees is the only/closest one in recent years.

NO ONE IS SAYING ALEX SMITH IS LIKE DREW BREES. The whole point of this thread is that, in the NFL, you should never count someone out.

It just so happens that Alex and Drew had similar injuries in terms of severity. Brees has OBVIOUSLY succeeded regardless. Alex, like Drew, SEEMS to be HEADING IN THAT DIRECTION (i.e. Not like Drew Brees yet, however, he COULD get there...).

Naaaaaa, he didn't struggle. Regardless of the situation he had more than 50 turnovers with his fumbles and Int's. Wow, just wow. I'll admit he does operate better in the shotgun but to say he didn't struggle is a stretch.
