Damn! A bit surprised and heartbroken. Was a great 49er and couldn't get that ring for him. Seeing him stunned post Super Bowl was hard to see. Hope everything is ok with him physically moving forward. Thank you Joe!

Two truths here. Incredibly sad seeing Staley walk away but unbelievable job replacing him with a probable upgrade

Damn. That sucks for our former greats

Madden foreshadowed this. Every franchise season I played with the Niners (played a couple), Joe retired.

Thank you Joe for the memories. Wish you would give it one more go, especially now with Williams on board, but if this is it, you are a Niners legend! Great player, great leader and even better person. Enjoy retirement, well deserved!

Would live to still see him on the sidelines or something. It's hard to imagine Niner football without Joe.

Good luck, Joe! Hope to see you around the locker room and sidelines. Stay healthy, bro.

Man thanks for EVERYTHING Joe. I still remember being so excited for that 2007 draft which seems like a lifetime ago. Definition of a 49er and it feels good knowing no one is ever going to wear #74 again. Just wish we could've got him a ring or two. Enjoy retirement and the HOF.

Thanks for all the good times! Loved the Joe Show!

Hope he transitions to Position Coach or remains with the Team in some capacity.

I could see them bringing him back in the playoffs if one of McG or T. Williams get hurt.

Sad to see though, I always wanted us to get Joe, Frank and Pat rings.....

STALEY RETIRES

I just saw it. This really sucks. I am SO glad that we have an immediate replacement. Hell, we have an upgrade. But this sucks. I wish there was some way we can get him to stay a final year. A man that suffered through Nolan, Singletary, Tomsula, Kelly, Baalke, etc. This is so bittersweet.

Joe was there during the tough years. I wish he, Willis, and Gore got a ring though. Maybe Staley can stay in shape then reactivate/reinstate during the playoffs and we can use him on big packages. Tackles always get dinged up, but I have to say our 2 rookies from last year did well as Shanny schemed them well.

A great player but even a more amazing person. Wish him nothing but the best in retirement. Hopefully he sticks around and does some commentary or something. He was always funny.
