I wonder if people said the same thing about Cody Pickett or Ken Dorsey. Never understood the fascination of late round QBs some how blossoming into HOFers. For every Tom Brady there are 20...well...Picketts and Dorseys.

the difference with them is, when they had their chance they failed....if Davis does horrible...then, well that is his chance....

you can still struggle alittle but still show signs of being a good QB. as a rookie.
but if you still struggling after a few years well....

Dorsey and Pickett it was obvious early on.

I agree with you. I just think no matter who we field out there (unless its Brady, Brees, or Manning) they are going to be a victim of circumstance.

Its no coincidence that our o-line, QB, running game, WRs...pretty much our entire offense does BETTER out of a spread formation.

And its not just "garbage time" heroics. Look at the first half of the SF-INDY game. Same thing. We come out firing which was nice...go up 14-9 against the Colts..only to play it safe in the 2nd and struggle.

Bottom line: If you're not put in a position to win...you wont win. And, no Im not saying Alex will be a HOFer. My point is this:

Before we turn to a 5th round 3rd string QB who has ZERO experience in this offense (plays DB in practice)...why not just install the spread or make it 60+% of the offense and see how it goes. If we succeed...great...(see the Patriots). If not..then no harm no foul. Seasons done anyway right?

*BTW, Im not comparing Smith to Brady...I'm just bringing up the Patriots, Colts, etc to show the degree of success you can have with a spread offense/shotgun offense. We have a talented QB and uber talented WR that have operated out of the spread their whole careers...so why not just go with that before we go with Nate, Shaun, Colt, Bradford, etc etc.

Am I being unreasonable?
I took a quick look at ESPN's QB ratings. They do not include today's games yet. But I looked at the top-rated QBs drafted the last five years:
2005 Smith ---
Rodgers 101.8
2006 Leinart ---
Young ----
Cutler 76.0
2007 Russell 47.7
Edwards 74.1
Quinn ---
2008 Ryan 78.8
Henne 77.7
Flacco 90.7
2009 Stafford 59.5
Snchez 66.5

The --- means these QBs have either not played this year or have not played enough to qualify for the list. My point, however, is that one should not be too anxious to throw Alex on the trash heap. As can be seen, the percentage of highly rated QBs that excel are far and few between, at least in the early years. Our chances of drafting one who quickly leads us to the SB is practically nil.

Wow. Dude wtf. So no one is allowed to disagree with Jerry Rice? Not saying I disagree. I just disagree w/throwing in Nate this season w/o an offensive overhaul.

Well Jerry has never been high on Alex, so I'm not really surprised at him saying that.

yeah, but like me, he says we need to open it up early in games for Alex (or I'm sure any QB we have back there) because the current plan is obviously not working.

so its not like he is a Hater.....just hasn't seen anything in Alex to crown him, I guess.

Opening it up early would be a good idea. I wonder why we don't do that?

because the Coaches don't trust Alex....is it not THat obvious? They tried against the Bears and it worked...Alex played well and made some nice throws and the offense was moving....BUT Alex threw is patent 1int a game pass, and the coaches went back into their shell....

I really believe that if Alex didn't commit 4 turnovers against the Titans 5 days earlier, they would have gave him a chance in the 2nd have with the same type of approach to redeem himself.....but it seems that Titans game is still on their minds...

I mean why the hell would they make a big deal after 1int in the 1st half against the Bears.....we came out trying to run out the clock in the second half with a 4 point lead.

These coaches don't know what the hell they want..... I'm starting to believe there is more than one person in charge and there is no ONE person in charge of the team.

He seems to have said Alex "MIGHT" not be the future, I agree with that.
I wouldn't toss Nate in yet either, I would move Hill down the bench and give Nate his reps, and let Alex run things until we know what we have, I also would draft another QB this year, but I sure as hell would listen to what Rice has to say, I sure as hell respect him more then Smith!

ok ok.... the other host was basically saying Alex is not the answer and tried to get Jerry to admit it..... Rag (other host) said that if the 9ers struggle these next two games that Nate Davis should be brought in to see what they have in the kid, just to get ready for next year.....basically to see if we need to draft a QB in the early rounds or not.

haha

Opening it up is our only chance to win. Sure there will be some bad games. But you hope there will be more good ones. We can't win with the current strategy. We know that much right?

Yeah but I mean you got to be able to recover if your QB makes mistakes, because all of them do. Peyton threw 2 INTs today and 2 last week, but in the end the colts won anyway because they have the team to win if 1 player isn't perfect week in/week out. That allows your QB to take more shots and, well, yeah...

If the QB is to blame for everything, who cares who else we draft or who our coaches are? Let's just pick 7 QBs in the next draft and which ever one is the best will be our starter. Superbowl here we come.

I agree with Jerry actually not a bad idea to throw Nate Davis in we got nothing else to lose we ain't going to the playoffs. See if Davis shows promise to see if we need to draft a QB. It's called process of elimination I think. Steve Young I recalled said Smith is not that good as well. I believe them more than anyone else in this board cause they know what it takes to WIN and Alexandra does not.

Unfortunately its a QB driven league so unless your QB is good your team will always be criticized and that's been our problem for years bro. Lighten up!

lol Just the other week Steve said Alex is a late bloomer and a good player. It was after the Colts game. He said that on ESPN.

Yeah...lets throw Nate in. I'm sure he will light it up and cure our problems on the line, and make our play calling better.

Again...for the millionth time...why bring in Nate when we can do better by tweaking our offensive philosophy with the talent we have. It makes ZERO sense to just insert a 5th round project QB who hasnt thrown a pass in the regular season or practice. ZERO.
