Man thank god for the defense cuz this guy i just a joke he cant manage the game for s**t
he looks lost out there locking into receivers i mean what the hell!!!!!!
he plays like a shaky rookie out there.................HE IS NOT THE ANSWER

LISTEN UP NINER FANS WE WILL ALWAYS have up & down type of games with this guy at the helm if we had a consistant QB like Philip Rivers the league would probably talking about us like they talk about the Saints & the Cowgirls

FACE IT ALL THE GROUPY FANS DONT WANT TO HURT SMITH'S FEELINGS but the truth of the matter is Smith at best is a average or below average QB

we still wont go 10-6 or even 11-5
with his up & down play

i really like how our D plays but even i know we dont have the 2000 ravens defense even though we have a QB that plays similar to Dilfer

WE CANT COUNT ON THE D TO WIN US THE GAME EVERY WEEK

Unbiased huh??

Get off his nutz already! The defense gave him 5 extra opportunities to do something with the ball and how many points did he get us??

Yey! Go Alex!! I'm waving my imaginary pompoms!! And am hypnotized by your zombie-looking eyes!

yes, unbiased... two years ago i was the one saying that he is done and over with.. the only reason im in his corner now is that the guy can make the throws.. and you all can see it.. there is glimpses of greatness in him.. it was the same for steve young too.. they both lost alot to start. Steve young then learned to win and did it well.. i think we should listen to his old coach urban and let him learn

"Unbiased" means you are in NO corner. That you have an objective mind and are open to seeing all the facts... Same question goes out to you:

How much time would you think its fair to give him to develop more "glimpses of greatness" before you realize he has it or not? This season? 1 more year? 2? The rest of his life?

One of the reasons Raye calls plays the way he does is that he is trying to disguise our glaring weakness, which is that our OL cannot block or pass protect.

If any of you really think that we can bring in some superstar quarterback who is going to light up the field and make this team into an offensive powerhouse, then you better think again. If we bring in some other quarterback under these same conditions, he is going to fail miserably, and we are going to go back to the same issue with all you fans again bashing the QB and asking for another.

The fact of the matter is that Alex Smith is the best quarterback on this team and he IS our QB of the future. We better get used to it and start providing him with the necessary help in order to allow him to develop into the great player he has the potential to be. Anyone who watched last night's game and did not realize the abilities that Alex gives this team is living in denial and seems to be wanting Alex to fail only to prove a point.

Beginning in the first drive, Alex was able to turn a broken play into a fantastic pass to Crabtree on the run. He was actually avoiding pressure, running to his right and back, and flung a perfect laser to Crabtree as he was falling backwards. Not every quarterback can do that, and Hill especially could not have come up with that play. No knock on Hill, as I like him also, but he simply does not possess the physical tools that Alex has. Then on several other plays Alex was able to avoid pressure, go through his reads in about 2 seconds and make an improvised play that got us positive yardage. Under these conditions his performance was actually quite impressive, except to the delusional fan who lives in a fantasy where a superhero QB can step onto the field with this Offensive line and deliver Peyton-like performances.

As for the underthrown ball to Crabtree, yes it was underthrown, but how many times have we seen QB's in this league underthrow their receivers, but still come away with a completion and sometimes a TD. Just last Sunday Drew Brees threw a badly underthrown ball downfield, but Robert Meachem came back, jumped, caught the ball, avoided two defenders, and scored a TD. To think that your QB is going to throw a pinpoint accurate deep ball every time is beyond ludicrous, and verges on insanity.

The bottom line is that unless we fix our glaring problems on the Offensive Line, do not expect to have a successful offense, regardless of who is under center. And all of you asking to play Nate Davis, please check yourself into the nearest mental institution in order to get your head examined. Are you seriously going to risk destroying the confidence, and possibly the career, of a young QB who had some bright spots in a couple pre-season games playing against 3rd and 4th stringers who were subsequently released by their teams? It's all about the OL, and until we get an effective line that an pass protect and create holes, we should expect to continue to struggle on the offensive side of the ball.

Totally agree w/your assessment ! re...the value of a great OL = ...in one year, the difference of the QB play of Cutler behind Chi's OL and Orton behind Den's OL

Alex Smith is HORRIBLE. We should have lost last night's game. Had Shaun Hill played -- we would have destroyed the Bears.

But no -- instead we're stuck with yet another Alex Smith Sucktacular and yet another Smith apologist thread.

We would have destroyed the Bears had Shaun Hill played? Do you even live on the same planet? You mean just like we were destroying teams left and right with Shaun Hill? Just like we destroyed the Falcons? Just like we were destroying the Texans in the first half until Smith came in and messed it all up in the second half? As I said in my previous thread, people like you want Smith to fail just to prove a point.

I see only a couple of "Bad" plays on his part. The pass he threw to nowhere when he had 2 wide open receivers in the endzone was my main concern..

do you really blame alex? It seems that the whole team does not have faith in him when he throws the football and it shows in his performance. He threw it away because he doesnt want to make a mistake... His dink and dunk short passes when he wants to go deep with the football

guess what.... THATS WHY WE BENCHED HILL...

I'll really tell you why we never scored 20 or 30 in that game.. on 3rd and 10 raye calls a draw up the middle.. way to conservative..

By the way.... I do not blame alex on the int.... Man coverage against crabtree and you SHOULD go deep with it.. enough air was under it where it was practically positioning that wins you the football. Crabtree slipped up and gave the DB perfect jump on it.. If that was calvin johnson everyone would be saying "what a nice throw by alex smith"

all in all, as long as we win, i think no one really cares what we do.. they say they like to throw and stuff and thats cool, but 30 short 5 yard pass plays arent going to get the job done. We all see flashes of greatness in alex, lets develop it and turn him into a star that he could be..

U guys agree?

Smith threw the ball away because of pressure, he did not have time to throw to Davis or Morgan. Smith wasnt good and you can see that the coaches do not have faith in him.

If they dont have faith in him why is he still at QB? Hill can hand the ball off 9 times in a row too

It may also help to call a passing play before third down from time to time.
If anything tells you what a QB can or cant do with an OL look no further than Jay Cutler and Kyle Orton. In Denver they have always had a good line, and Cutler used it to his advantage when he was there. Now he is in Chicago who doesnt have a good line....look at him now. Then on the other side of the coin, look at Orton. Went from a bad line to a good one, now he is making Chicago look like fools.

Until our offensive line is fixed, our QBs (no matter who is back there) will look like crap.

I didn't read all the comments that were posted, But of the ones I did read no one blamed the main person responsible for the offensive woes and that would be our beloved OC Jimmy Raye! Jimmy Raye?! Yes, Jimmy Raye!

When you have a running back of Frank Gore's caliber and you re-sign his best friend/and one of the last true fullbacks in the league in Morran Norris you're supposed to use him. Not just because Frank trusts him to block for him, But because he's very good at his job. On the first possession in the redzone was where the 49ers smash-mouth football should've been displayed. Not one time during that offensive sequence did Raye put Norris in the game. He called a couple pass plays and ran Frank out of the spread formation, But the next time the offense had the ball what formation did he start using. That's poor play-calling. And the int, was that really on him or Crabtree? Unless he's going over the middle, running a slant or catch WR screen most of his routes are out routes toward the sideline. The same routes he ran @ TT! So they both get blamed for that one for the miscommunication.

Singletary said it himself past couple of week, " When Jimmy Raye really learns the personnel and what they can and can't do, then things are going to be difficult. "
Translation: Jimmy Raye is a slow study. At this point in the season he should know what these players can and can't do. We know Alex is good with bootlegs, roll-outs and play-action, But how much of those plays have we seen? It's not just about him being in the spread O, think of him sorta like Jake Plummer. He's a mobile QB who has good accuracy while throwing on the run. If they would call plays that would help Alex to be successful instead of concentrating on the formation.

overthrew him or under-threw him? you alex smith haters have to make up ur minds..

it seems that you guys are putting crabtree on a pedestal... I love him too, but that play was a rookie mistake im sorry.. if the play wasnt there he should have at least knocked the ball away and not slipped and just given the guy the interception

A QB has got to put the ball in a position where he can catch it. Alex did exactly that. In this case, the receiver was Zack Bowman.

lmao... ur a funny guy.. you should watch that play buddy.. when alex threw it, crabtree kept running like alex was punting or something.. it seemed like he never even tried to make a play on the ball... or he probably tried but slipped doing so.. same thing happened to jay cutler.. his reciever slipped and it was an easy pic for the niners..

Crabtree kept running because he expected the ball on his other shoulder.

exactly... and it wasnt... does that translate too.. keep running? umm no it doesnt.. it means get ur but back and make a play and not hand it over to that DB..

a perfect throw is not gonna come every time.. even payton manning overthrew a wide open reggie wayne for a td that he never got.

when alex was throwing beautiful balls to VD noone was complaing.. not many quarterbacks can throw those consistently but it seems alex has... so why do you keep nitpicking at the bad ones?

Crabtree had that, "Oh s**t it's underthrown!" moment, which is why he slipped.

Either way, the ball was underthrown which means it was a BAD throw.

exactly... he should anticipate that and make a play... not stumble

If Alex hit Crabtree in stride it would of been a Touchdown had his man beat simple as that.

The fact that it was a terrible thrown ball (underthrown and behind) it is difficult to stop your route going full speed and adjust to the ball.

Bet you Steve Young would say it was on the QB.

The DB did it!

Crabtree beat the DB don't you read that the pass was underthrown and behind? Of course the DB did it was right to him.

I saw the game. It's not like they were standing still, they both had to slow down and play the ball and the DB did a better job than Crabtree did, plain and simple.

Dude if they were standing still Crabtree would of not tripped. Had his man beat underthrown ball Crabtree trips trying to stop and adjust to the bad thrown ball and INT. Qb throws in stride and results in a Touchdown, open your eyes it was not a jump ball situation but Alex Smith sure thought it was when Crabtree was running vertical and open just resulted in a bad throw.

I never disagreed that the ball was underthrown. Not every pass is gonna be perfect. WR's have to make adjustments. There are times when the WR has to play defender on underthrown passes...you see it all the time. Sure, they don't plan for it to be a jump ball situation, but when a ball is underthrown, it becomes a jump ball situation. Crabtree knows the ball is coming, the DB doesn't. If anything, the WR should have the upper hand. I'm not saying it's all Crab's fault, but it's hardly all Alex's either.

. Has Alex Smith ever thrown an INT that was his fault? Some of you homers are downright ridiculous.

Great point. Any 49er fan who saw this game last night should really look no further. Everyone was CLAMORING for Jay Cutler to be signed in the off season. Well look what happens when you sign a "super star" QB with no protection. And what's Cutler's "excuse?" No double surgeries on his throwing arm. No revolving door at OC. He's got weapons. But of course...our fans will give Jay more of a pass then our own guy. Sad.

Yes, Alex Smith has thrown many interceptions that were his fault. Every quarterback in the league has thrown interceptions that are his fault. Every quarterback in the league has underthrown and overthrown receivers, missed open receivers, misread defenses, and made poor decisions. No one is saying Alex is an exception to that. However, the Alex bashers seem to be waiting for Alex to make one mistake so that they can put all the offensive (and defensive) woes squarely on his shoulders. Alex bashers want him to fail in order to feel justified in calling for his head. They are not being rational, and do not realize that if you bring in another QB under these circumstances, he is not likely to succeed. There is nothing wrong with criticizing Alex or his play, but there is something wrong in blaming Alex for all of the team's problems.
Smith is just buying us time to develop NATE DAVIS for next season.
