QB Situation Poll

Drafting high for a QB scares the crap out of me - too many busts!

Ummmm, as much as I do like McNabb, HELL no. His injury history is getting worse not better. I would make do with Hill if we want a "stop gap" at the QB position. I think that it's possible to get some worth from Smith. I know that some believe that it's impossible at this point but I don't know that it is. I know that I would LIKE to know before the man is sent packing though.

Yeah, I agree his injury record is getting worse. But who else is likely to be available? If we are not going to draft high as a long term replacement.

LOL I notice ht made Akili's name in all caps because he didn't want us to confuse it woth the other bust Alex Smith. Has anyone on earth heard anything good being commented on when Alex Smith's name is mentioned?? All i hear is bust...epic fail, etc. It's not homerism...it's an Alexism or it could be love lol.

Why waste a roster spot on him Ceaddar cheese man?? I know for certain he is a total joke. See him on the sidelines with his helmet on like he's gonna play or something. Looks like a blonde Forest Gump.

2010 free agent QB's...who wouldn't want to come play for coach sing...i'm just saying...

So, all of those coaches and whatnot saying that Alex has all the physical tools and intangibles to be great don't count?

He isn't very good squirell. Niner fans on this board and in the Smith household are the only praise that kid gets praise man. Think about it. HE WILL BE GOING INTO HIS 6th YEAR next year and he still doesn't look NFL caliber as of yet. That's a waste of money. If you don't have it, you don't have it.

I don't think we need to draft a QB but there are some good available in free agency and possibly Nate Davis depending on how the season goes. I just don't get it with 5 years of unwarranted Smith support. He didn't even play a good quarter in Seattle a few years ago. Maybe a decent drive. Mind boggling to me. I apologize.

Though I think that Couch really got the Bums rush in cleveland. Butch Davis mucked that up horribly. I find it completely odd that the Line that was drafted to protect Couch couldn't do so, and then when traded to another team could protect THAT Starter. It's something that I had NEVER in my life seen before. An entire OLine traded to another team. Couldn't be because the OLine coach isn't effective could it? Nawwwww that's not it at'all.

In any case Blue Chippers are great to speculate on but there is no guarantee or warranty on their foreheads. Until they get into the speed of the game they are just as bad as guys that play in the WAC or any other lower division conference, to my way of thinking.

~Ceadder

I'm sorry, but the practice of listing off previous busts is just not very compelling. If you are a franchise that needs to get a long-term starting QB, other teams aren't going to trade theirs to you very often. If you decide to draft one, you want to get the best one you can within reason. Pre-draft rankings are just the best guesses of all the experts involved.

So, if you need a franchise QB and you're on the clock at #5 with a couple high-first-round prospects staring you in the face, the fact that Ryan Leaf sucked is simply not a compelling reason to eschew those guys.

Not compelling huh?

Okay how's this.

You are on the clock with say the 1st overall because you traded up to get it(which isn't a smart move but I digress) and your MAIN problem is protecting the QBs' you have now. Do you take a Bluechip QB who is highly regarded because the 1st overall you chose 5 years ago, seems to have issues; OR do you use the TWO picks you have to draft BIG solid mobile Linemen to protect anyone that is under Center?

Me? I'm going right for the Muscle. Because even if my 1stOA pick does have issues, we can't protect our little sisters virtue from a 5 year old. And that is the most important thing to me. Look at Warner, Brady, Manning etc. Successful QBs' have SUCCESFUL OLines in front of them. I know we drafted some OLine personnel already, but if they aren't getting it done(1 game doesn't really say they aren't due to injuries) then they will benefit from the competition for their spot and whoever loses is the backup.

It's as simple as that.

Ohhhh and btw Alex Smith was NOT a Bluechip QB. He played for Utah who is NOT a Bluechip magnet. Bluechips go to schools with a rich tradition in Football. Schools line Notre Dame(yeah I know), USC, UCLA, Michigan, Ohio State, The U, etc. They DON'T play for Backwood wax paper degree schools. Hell Aaron Rodgers was more of a blue chipper than Smith could even be considered.

~Ceadder

"The Muscle" as you put it are not only more available in the draft, but also in FA. Upper echelon QB's are rarely acquired anywhere but the draft.

I too would draft 'muscle'. Please can we stop discussing Alex (could there be a more boring name) Smith - it is totally pointless.

Smith has only started 30 games and that was with pretty bad teams. I support every player on the niners as long as they are on the niners, it is called being a fan, what part of that do you not get?

My bad, maybe next year.
question cannot be answered until after the season. our offense is very young/inexperienced. we really need to give it a full year and evaluate everyone including hill. It's his 1st full year starting and he's 3-1 in a run 1st offense with a bad OL he's not going to put up Brady type #'s once we get the line fixed and crabtree into the lineup i think hills performance would be much better.

Let Davis learn to be an NFL QB. If we drafted somebody they would need to learn the position anyway. Nate should be way ahead of anyone we would draft and he has the physical tools. That's a better scenario than bringing in someone and rushing them into the lineup. If one of our QBs goes somewhere, gets seriously injured, or can get us something in a trade, and someone reliable is sitting there for us in the draft great. That would be the time to go for it but we shouldn't feel pressured and screw up expensively.

I don't think you have to assume that a rookie QB is going to take years and years to become viable. Look at Matt Ryan last year. No one ever confused him with the next Peyton Manning. He was just a "pretty good" franchise QB prospect who was good enough to come off the board first at his position, and he played well in his first year. Look at Sanchez in a similar position right now.

Shaun Hill >>>> Mark Sanchez

Don't believe me? Look at the numbers.

Numbers lie sometimes.

So throwing under 60% and more ints than tds is good?

Dude, are you crazy? Numbers lie all the time! For example, Alex Smith may not look great on paper (2:3 TD to INT ratio, a career QB rating of 63, 54% passing) but clearly he's a superior QB to Shaun Hill who has a career passer rating of over 90, throws more than 2 TDs for every INT, completes 63% of his passes, and has won 2.5x as many games as he's lost. I mean, it's not Alex's fault that he's had multiple OCs...wait, I think Hill did too. Hmmm. Well it's not Alex's fault he played behind a bad line. I think Hill actually performed better behind the same line tho. Ok, this is a bit confusing. I got it! Smith never had great receivers whereas Hill has...ummm...ok. Either way Hill is only successful because of Gore, and Smith never got the chance to play with Gor....oh wait. Anyways. Numbers Lie!!! Hill is garbage. Even if all the numbers suggest otherwise he has a noodle arm. Ha! there you go, that's my proof! I said "noodle-arm." You say Hill>>>>Sanchez, I say "noodle-arm" logic>>>>numbers logic!

Trade our 2 first rounders and a 2011 first rounder for Jamarcus Russell.

Smith has been dicked over a lot. I say we give him another chance since he's had some pretty horrible coaches in Nolan, Hostler and Martz after showing some promise with Norv. On top of that Hostler and Nolan brought in Darrell Jackson who was suppose to be the answer but did nothing but drop every pass thrown his way. It's hard to believe that I'm the only person who remembers all the dropped passes, sometimes I think people just look at Smith's statistics and judge him solely on that.

Alex Smith can be promoted to waterboy. Even thats too much, IMO, but Im willing to compromise.....

The 49ers want him on the team,he's the 2nd stringer,Shaun Hill is doing well and they're are 3-1

Brady Quinn? Either him or Derek Anderson will be available next season. Also, Carolina are not exactly world beaters this season and they will probably get a top 10 pick in the next draft, which of course would be ours. There will be some good QBs that will be available Bradford, Sneed, and McCoy. We can package both first rounders for Bradford (an almost guaranteed first pick.) However, we do have to be careful for the Rams because they will either have the first or second pick in the draft and they will draft a QB for sure.
