CRANK DAT CRABTREE LETTER
Sep 13, 2009 at 9:39 AM

- Info N/A
I am not one of those that would wish ill on Crabtree's career should he not sign with the 49ers. There are two sides to everything, and I am curious how the 49ers approached this entire ordeal. With the organization claiming that the signing will get done, nothing has materialized. And after YEARS of front office incompetence, I am more than inclined to believe that they must take their share of the blame for this.
At first, I was for the 49ers standing their ground. However this is also an organization that gets no loyalty from the NFL, so what's wrong with bucking the system so that you could get a potential game changer? If the NFL was serious about a rookie pay scale, they should have implemented one long ago. As it seems now, those rules seem to be "flexible" and dependent upon an organization and/or need. Eddie D doled out the money because he understood that you do need money to win, while the Yorks seem intent on getting maximum profit for minimal goods. If we have room under the salary cap, why not make an investment? You trust these guys with the picks next year?
Yeah, the offer is fair for the slot and such. But as someone previously noted, who cares? Just give him more and get on with it.

I still don't understand how the 49ers can be so stupid to think that they can just offer one contract and be done with "negotiations." Do the Yorks want to get the approval of the fellow owners? The other owners are laughing at them.
I can garuntee you that the other owners (Jerry Jones excluded) are NOT laughing at the Niners. I'm sure they are VERY thankful to the Yorks for not caving and breaking the slotting system.
How can you guarantee that ?
They probably are laughing at us for not attempting to meet in the middle somewhere and show that we are at least trying to sign him.
They are also going to be thankful for us for basically drafting him for another team or allowing him to re-enter the draft thus adding to the talent available in next years draft.
The NFL is a business. If 1 person overpays for a commodity it drives up the market value. Not to mention how many of these other organizations would be dealing with the Crabtree situation next year if the Niners cave. Again these are businessmen and us caving hurts their bottom line.
Thanks for showing me how to spell guarantee though.
When Fitz or Brady Quinn broke the slotting system how did that affect the following year's draft and getting players signed ? It did not.
thanks, I hope in the letter we wrote crabs went along the lines of this...." sign now or we will use one of our 2 1st rd draft picks next yr to draft you again, so you will be 2 yrs out with no $$$, ya dig?"

Michael Crabtree, sure do wish we could have had you as we surely did need you. Oh well back to watching another year of playmaker deficient football on offense.
I'm thinking he just doesn't want to play for us. If he wanted to play for a playoff team then unless that team is willing to deal up in the draft (and none of them did), then by virtue of being a top draft pick, you're going to a lower calibre team.
He could have signed the slotting contract and became the playmaker he said he is, then held out next year, or the following year to get his money after he actually showed us something. At least that way the fans would have his back because he did produce. The niners have been good at rewarding their producers before their contracts have been up (ex Gore).
The guy has never played a down of professional football and his agent took him down a path that can't be reversed.

That's not what he said. Schefter said at this time (and he stressed that it's just at this time) it APPEARS that Crabtree COULD sit out the season.
Nobody has reported that Crabtree definitely will sit out the season.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/09/13/report-crabtree-likely-to-re-enter-draft/
Adam Schefter just reported on ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown that there hasn't been much progress between the 49ers and first-round pick Michael Crabtree on a contract and that "signs" are that he'll re-enter the draft in 2010.
Schefter reports that there's "every expectation" that Crabtree will sit out this season. The Niners still want to sign him and still think he can help this year, but neither side is willing to budge at all in negotiations, which makes a resolution less likely by the day.
That contradicts reports earlier in the week that Crabtree's resolve was weakening, but may lend some credence to the notion that the 49ers will investigate potential tampering with Crabtree from teams letting him know that they'll pay him what he wants if they get a chance to select him next April.

why does anyone think crabtree will reach the 2010 draft? it's ridiculous. we would trade him after march 1st even if it were for a 7th round pick.... that's better than nothing!
