Alex Boone = a gem?

I remember when nvchamp said that Boone and Jason Smith would be top 15 picks and were 2 great LT prospects.

They certainly appear to have the talent

i have my doubts that he can handle the pass rush. i hope i'm wrong. as much as we wish he could step in at right tackle, i think there's a greater chance he gets moved inside and ends up being a decent road-grading guard.

I think most of our signed OL that weren't here last year will get a good shot of showing their stuff this preseason and camp.

Did not read much about Alex Boone this past week in training camp. Was anyone there at camp and if so, can you share what you observered about Alex Boone.... and our O-Line?

So would you call Boone Sushi Jr., because he's so raw? Last year you christened Chilo Rachal Sushi for the same reason, and he has turned out OK so far. Would you say he has exceeded your expectations as they were at this point a year ago?

Singletary -- unlike Nolan -- seems to like younger players and to see what they've got in game situations, so perhaps several will make the final 53. I'm curious as to where players like Boone, Sheets, Brooks, Taylor, etc., are after the final cuts and adjustments.

If the kid stays healthy and keeps his nose clean, he could make this team and a contribution too.

Rachal was sushi last season, there is no debate. He was really raw in his technique and knowledge of assignments, and needed a lot of time to finally get into the lineup. Even when he began to start, he caused Singletary's blood to rise after the Cowboys' game, as the coach singled him out in the press conference. And, he's still going to be raw going into 2009. The good news is that his athleticism makes up for some of his errors, and his potential to be a good player down the road is likely. He is certainly not there yet.

Just like Rachal was/is sushi, Boone finds himself in the same situation this season. In the latest report from MM, Boone is doing pretty well in run blocking, but struggling at times in pass protection. Does this mean that he has no chance in this league? No. But, as I stated earlier, he is overrated on this board, and looks more and more likely to end up on the practice squad.

A fair amount of board members annointed Boone the future starter at RT the moment he signed a FA contract, and while this is a possibility, it is surely not a certainty, and is way too premature.

The Niners will have to make some big decisions on their rookies. It appears as if Davis is a 50-50 to make the big 53, and the same goes for Ricky Jean-Francois, who was handled pretty easily by the LT in a latest update. If McDonald returns, RJF has virtually no chance.

Taylor is a big longshot to make the 53 man. Very unlikely. The Niners have their four safeties already.

I see Sheets as having a better shot at making the squad than Boone. Sheets is very solid in the flats, and may be able to add an explosive element to the passing game. The Niners will have to figure out how many backs to carry. If they classify M. Robinson as a FB, he has a better shot.

P.S. A final note. I stated before camp began that many were in error to discount Sims from having any chance to make this team. While certainly no lock, coaches love some of these crafty vets who can play both tackle positions. They may not be pretty, but their experience cannot be discounted, even after struggling in pass protection last season.

-This is a crucial week for players on the bottom of the roster according to Singletary, who made the comment in response to a question about Alex Boone. "We're pleased with what we've seen but we need to see more in a hurry. We are going to turn it up for a number of guys."

I really hope he turns it up. Not only would it be a good story we could really use the depth.
