How about those that stuck with the team through the sixties and seventies. True fans stay with the team regardless of how the team performs on game day.

Those times couldn't have been much worse than these. I will have to take your word for it though, I didn't start watching the niners until 1980.

The seventies weren't all that terrible. We had some decent teams in the early part of the decade that went to the playoffs -- followed by a dry spell of seven or eight seasons. The team wasn't terrible during those non-playoff years either -- in fact Monte Clarke posted a winning season in 1976.

The worst part of that era though had to be those consecutive 2-14 seasons -- although the 2-14 season under Walsh was bearable because you could SEE the team getting better and better week by week. It just wasn't translating to wins yet -- but you could at least see that Walsh was building something.

As a Niner fan who began following this team in the early seventies? This is the worst stretch or run of football I've ever seen this team go through. What we're seeing now doesn't compare to those years in the 70's. Those teams weren't playoff teams -- but with the "49er Gold Rush" setting sack records -- they were fun to watch.

The current team isn't fun to watch. Period. End of story.
my awesome tattoo.

Sticking with a York owned team for a decade when you know it's all but hopeless. That's a true fan.

A "TRUE" fan of any team, is simply one that loves it, lives and dies by it, no matter what, forever.

You don't always have to like what is happening, agree with who is starting or decisions made by the team. You may or may not have the opportunity to go to or watch every game.

I (like most of you) have a favorite team in every sport I care about. Some, have been great investments, for years the Niners were one. Others, like the Phillies, have spent the majority of my life making me suffer, but just now, are finally offering some success.

But regardelss of past success, recent success, or any level of negativity or enthusiam about a current season or personnel or management decisions, EVERY game has been a live or die event for me. Doesn't matter if it is to get to the Superbowl or the last game of a 2-14 season.

If you love the team, if their wins and losses make or break your week, if a playoff/Superbowl win can make or break your year, then you are "true" fan.

If you have ever considered naming your first child Joe, Jerry, Steve, Ronnie, Montana, BW, or Eddie, you are a true fan.

If you didn't know whether to call a hitman for Roger Craig or send him flowers in 1990, you are a true fan.

If you could fall in love with Dieon Sanders of all people, if only for a year, because he wore the red and gold, and then hate him again a year later with all your heart, you are a true fan.

If you still think Lawerence Phillips deserves the death penalty, you are a true fan.

If you know anyone who considered getting a "Bar None" tatoo, you are a true fan.

If you actually convinced yourself, "sure Tim Rattay can win us a Superbowl", you are a true fan.

If you wonder why Tom Rathman isn't on the 44 cent piece, you are a true fan.

If you have a daughter named "Williamina Walshette", you are a true fan.

If you even know what an "Amp Lee" is, you are a true fan.

If you wish you could be the goalpost, just to be that close to Ken Norton Jr., you are a true fan.

Bottom line: As long as you love the Niners, all our silly disagreement aside, you are a TRUE fan.

Watching every game of the 2004 season at a bar like I did.
having a Justin Smith jersey!

A "true" fan is someone who is ALWAYS proud of their Niners.

B.) Someone who is "not a true fan" is someone who has not shed a tear from a devastating loss.
Watching the whole game no matter what.

That's me. I have been a 49ers fan since 1960 and I have never turned a game off and I will never give up on my team. GO 9ers!

saying "NIIIIIIINNEEEERS" in a loud retarded voice before and after games as you walk around the stadium
been faithful even when we are on the downfall of the YORK era lol
A.) A "true" fan is someone who...

... is loyal. You don't have to like the coach, owner, or players, but you don't go cheering another team to beat your team simply because you don't like the roster as its currently constituted.

B.) Someone who is "not a true fan" is someone who...

... hopes Singletary, Smith, or whoever fails so they get fired or cut. You can believe they will fail and expect them to get fired or cut, you can be upset that Smith, for example, hasn't been replaced, but you hold out hope that the decision made was the right one.

Singletary is my issue, for example. I don't think he's a good coach. I think he'll be fired at the end of this season. But I HOPE he suddenly has an epiphany, or that I'm plain wrong. I hope he proves me wrong. I hope he becomes successful. If that happens, I'll happily admit I was wrong and cheer for Mike Singletary.
Loyalty to the team through thick and thin. Not blind loyalty, but informed and educated loyalty!
