this.
They don't have to win for me. I just get pissed when my expectations are blown. Really, there were more depressing years for me back in the golden years....to this day I think we should have had that 3 peat.

Even with the way they play I am still spending my money to fly down and see a game. Have done it every year since 2001 (basically every year since they have been crap).
I would call that a fan.

Yeah man, my girlfriend at the time actually cried when they lost that game...I drank a fifth of bourbon and passed the f**k out.

We are all fans(unless there are some fans from other teams masquerading as niner fans to stir up trouble).
The difference is how we express how devotion to our team.
In the end, we all want to see the 49ers do well.

Well -- I don't want to get into any trouble over this -- but I might. Just remember Mods -- I'm not aiming this at anyone in particular.
If ANYONE -- I mean ANYONE -- begins to question my loyalty to the Niners -- said person automatically falls into my Cheesedi(k category never to get out. Personally? I don't give a rat's booty about anyone who dares post any statement of how to define a "true fan."
People who do have obvious shortcomings. Perhaps they were dropped too many times as a child. I don't know. I don't care. I don't have time for them. I'm not going to waste my time on them. I actually egg them on -- because at some point they're gonna flame out.
Stoney puts it best on his profile page: "Lighten Up Francis."
There are a select few who can't. Boo Freakin' Hoo.

Anyone like me who still sports a 49er hat in public even during 2-14 seasons, and I have lived through 3 of them, this better not be the 4th.

A true fan is someone who has watched the Niners since the 50's. watched through all the losing seasons then through all the Glory Years. Had season tickets for 40 years until in her 80's couldn't navigate the stadium any longer so she sold her tickets. She still watches the games religiously every Sunday screaming and shouting hoping for another Super Bowl.
This is my mother, god bless her heart.
And she hates the Raiders....

Agreed.
Some people feel a "true" fan is someone who blindly supports everything about the franchise. This is BS. I don't feel you have to ride the Yorks jocks and agree with everything they do to be a fan. Part of being a true fan is being critical when you feel certain players or coaches or ownership are bringing the franchise down.
But this board is made up of true fans. Anyone who sees the product on the field and doesn't run away screaming in terror but keeps commenting and hoping for better days is a true fan.

How about those that stuck with the team through the sixties and seventies. True fans stay with the team regardless of how the team performs on game day.

A true fan, is in the floor, cryin his eyes out because they marked down the field in the last minute, with a quarterback he hates, and tied the game to potentially go into overtime, saying "why can't they always play like this!?!?"
lol, that saints game was hard on me, and i was AT the chiefs game lol.
It's knowing the score every second of every game no matter what, this includes and is not limited to going into the office of your job, turning on a radio, and pretending to do paperwork while you're listening to the game
It's sticking with them through the things you disagree with, it's coming on a message board to be with other fans, even if you're arguing, because you're proud you're not the only one in the world who cares what the team is doing
A TRUE 49ers fan? I call them family

You feel miserable for the rest of the day and into the next week when the Niners go on the road and lose 31-6 or 31-10.
For the old-timers, you still can't think of that NFC Title game in 1990 without feeling a twinge of pain. Even further back, you went out to the Stick when the Niners were 2-14 and drawing 30,000-35,000 and rooting for Scott Bull to do something (anything) and loving Paul Hofer.

Those times couldn't have been much worse than these. I will have to take your word for it though, I didn't start watching the niners until 1980.
