I'll admit, like MadDog, I didn't think Brooks had the fire and passion for football that it takes to make it in the NFL. The development of Brooks is a direct testament to coach Singletary, who really believed in this kid when literally nobody else did.

I just don't get it. Personally I think A. Brooks is going to take over for P. Haralson. folks need to remember that M. Lawson is much better in coverage covering rb's, fb's and te's. so what Manny can't get to the qb. I'm calling this now. Manny Lawson will get more sacks now that opposing O will have to account for Hot Nicks ala NC State when Manny and Mario had it going there.

Sure. You can never have enough good pass rushers. Why not get Brandon Graham or Jerry Hughes?
The development of Brooks, IF he continues to play well in this rotation, would allow the 49ers more opportunity to pick the better of two players at different positions of need.
For example, if there is a good FS (moving Goldson to SS) and a good pass rusher of roughly equal value on the board, they could choose the FS rather than a pass rusher. Three weeks ago, the pass rusher would be the no-brainer.
It is nice to see Brooks' development. There has never been a question of ability. It has always been a lack of work ethic combined with questionable character that has held him back. I believe Singletary's handling of him has been right on - keep on the bench until he has proven his work ethic, and then feeding him just enough PT keep him fed but not any more until he has proven he is not just a flash-in-the-pan. Now he seems to be established in Sing's mind and he is doing well.

I too am in the camp that Singletary has a HUGE father-figure effect on players such as Davis and Brooks. Brooks was healing from some injuries most of this year and I like that they are slowly working him in. He's still not in tip-top shape but he has the opportunity to work his way into the starting lineup by the end of the year or compete to start next year.
Not only is he quick, big, strong, has natural pass rushing talent but his closing speed (explosion) is unbelievable esp. for a guy his size. That closing speed is something Manny has never had and is why he always seems close-but-no-cigar. Manny has been pretty poor at covering RB's & TE's this year (actually, ALL of our LB's have been very poor at this). Manny has done a great job of ceiling the edge this year against the run (save for against speedy outside-running backs).
It will be interesting now to see what they do with Brooks now that both Haralson and Manny are starting to get some sacks.
But let's be real here too - Manny only picked it up once he lost his 3rd down pass rushing job to Brooks. So maybe the character issues and lack of motivation topics we should be saving for Manny, not Brooks. Brooks has busted his azz since training camp and never gives up on a play (judging by his actual play this year, not his past reputation).
Either way, I'm stoked for Brooks...was a huge fan even before the Supplemental Draft and I'm glad we have a coaching staff that is helping to mold him into a good man and great player. I'm happy for the entire defense as it's really picked up everyone's game sack/pressure-wise.

Brooks looked really good last night, but it was only one game. Lets see if he can keep it up before we start screaming for a long term contract.
I really like the rotation at OLB with Lawson and Brooks. Seems like a good combo for the near future. If Haralson can get it going on the other side, we'll be on our way to a great D.

I do agree with your evaluation of Manny Lawson, whom I feel out of all our OLBs is the most versatile and could play both 4-3 or 3-4 OLB, but I'm going to have to disagree on the Haralson dethroning.
Most likely, they will rotate each guy in. Haralson (outside of the Tennessee game) plays very strong run support. Brooks has only shown strong pass rush, so they will rotate the OLBs. Someone in another thread posted this, but most likely will keep all three of our OLBs and pick up another rotational OLB so we can keep a fresh team and throw off our opponents with different looks. As long as our front 7 keep playing the way they do, might just need a lockdown CB.

I'd sign him long term now b/c he'd be dirt cheap and has shown good signs of progress. Better than trying to develop a 5th round OLB...

Yup! For sure...and lighting a fire under their arses (ala Manny's response to Brooks taking over). I've been saying we've been doing a nice job of rotating the d-line but terrible at the OLB spots. Brooks is the specialist Haralson was last year but part of what helped Haralson succeed was the fact that he had one job and had plenty of rest coming off the bench in pass rushing situations.
