I think he's potentially a steal in the 6th rd.

I dont keep up with Fresno State, but everyone i've talked to said he was the best receiver on their team period, and that he was actually severly under utilized. Anyway...my opinion may be a bit bias cause a good friend of mine knows him well - does the roping and rodeo stuff with him and his family all the time, but I'm excited about us getting him. I don't pretend to think he's going to go out and scare defenders like VD might, but I like to think back at Brent Jones or Jay Novacek....not the primary flashy guys but dependable workhorses who keep the chains moving at crunchtime. And I here he's a pretty cool guy who should get along well in the locker room....I doubt you'll see him yanked from the bench and sent to the locker room during a game.
Bear will NEVER surpass Vernon Davis on our depth chart unless of injury

True, there's no argument there. I think the question is the future. The team may be looking at the potential of having 2 solid players for the price of just 1 who may have super human potential, but cant seem to translate that potential to the field. They could want someone who will compliment Crabtree and Gore, not battle them for the spotlight.
I have this to say about Vernon. He is a team player. He never complained about not getting balls last year, he just kept punishing people on the line. That is my type of player. This year is going to be different because he is going to be featured. He will catch at least 60 balls. He is turning into a great leader that we need on offense. He would have my vote for captian.
Another thing ois, Bear Pascoe hasnt even played a down in the NFL yet so lets hold our horses on locking him up long term. Vernon Davis is an established player.
Well i wouldnt know if i'd go that far yet, however just like some are with a no1 qb, they have to be the same with VD. He wasnt drafted to be a blocker, but everyone says thats his strong point. Buzz is that Bear has more natural hands than VD, and i do agree that if VD's contract is up next year, they will want him to take less money, because they found a diamond in the rough with Bear. And just like it happened with smith, VD will probably be given a backups salary at that position. Well if not that little, know where near what he already gained since he's been here.

If anything i will say this, whether it be Smith, or VD, or lawson, all these players sure cleaned up money wise no matter if they produced the great results or not.

The unknown commodity is always a fan favorite here in the zone but this takes it to a whole new level.

I would "Bearly" say Davis is "established".

One mini-camp without pads or NFL defensive starter and he's Antonio Gates? If you work in the Niners' front office, that helps explain the six losing seasons.

Maiocco's comparison to Bajema was clearly satire - since Bajema was another wasted roster spot in the Nolan tradition of gutty, useless drones.
Speaking of Bajema, I was watching the Niners Skins game again the other day. That was a great over the shoulder catch he had in the first quarter. I think that is the only catch i can remember him making

Now a Brent Jones or Jay Novacek like find would be very sweet ------ one can only hope.

Wow the guy has one good weekend and your already wanting to throw VD under the bus?

Considering the turnover at offensive coordinator and the weak performance of the o-line, VD has done a pretty good job for us in his role as an offensive lineman which he pretty much had to stay back and block all the time.

Give VD more time.

Sounds like a lot of excuses. More time? How much?

They are not excuses. Give the guy a consistent system and a decent line so he does not have to stay back and block, then he goes out and catches passes.
Which is what we are all expecting of him.
Bear will not even be a Niner in 3 yrs.

New thread instead of being on Alex Smith being a bust, what was Maicocco trying to say about Vernon Davis?

I thought MM was saying Bear Pascoe could be taking over VD's role when we let him walk in two years.

--I saw more receiving ability from rookie tight end Bear Pascoe in two practices than I saw from Billy Bajema, the man he's replacing, in four seasons. Pascoe first duty with the 49ers is to be a blocking specialist. Depending on what happens down the road with Vernon Davis , he might be the every-down guy in a year or two.

I don't know if the 9ers will want Davis back, unless he takes less money. VD/Pascoe could have their positions THIS YEAR mixed up. Over time Davis might be the best blocking TE, and Pascoe might be a better pass catching TE on the roster. With Walker used in situational spots of course.

Pascoe from his very first press conference was not shy about wanting to be featured in the passing attack. It will be interesting to see how his career shakes out.

Pascoe hasnt done anything yet
