Just curious, but why do you say that?

The dipping of his rear shoulder. The over-thown passes reference is to his past game play, not this training camp.

Yep. Dipping your back shoulder makes your body aim upward, so when you release the ball it goes higher than normal. Which contributes to overthrown passes.

5 years into the NFL after being the #1 overall pick and not having decent mechanics.

Dipping your shoulder can do that, but it depends more on your release point than the position your shoulder is in.If you are throwing a deep ball some qb's tend to drop the back shoulder as an exaggeration of their wind up,like when a pitcher reaching back to put a little more on the fastball. If you watch Brett Farve when he is throwing deep he always drops his back shoulder. Some guys can do it without loosing accuracy, some guys can't.

I can't deny or confirm whether hes done that in a game before, but I remember Jaws saying on MNF against the Hawks that his mechanics were f**ked up....

That was when he was throwing with a dislocated shoulder. To me, his mechanics at that time have completely no bearing at all whatsoever to how he's throwing today.

But yeah, i think he's winding up for a deep ball.

I'm pretty sure that he'd be more square if he was throwing short.

Well it was nice to actually see that smith got it right and changed the afternoon session to cheers. and at least was honest and said on a few missed plays it wasnt necessarily just him, that the entire offense may have been out of sinc, with the receivers and the o-line.

He went 7 for 8 in the afternoon, with throwing two bombs, to brandon jones, first with the second team covering on a 30 yd pass with allen rossum covering, than even better on the next when nate got beat by jones, and smith found him for a 50 yd td pass that was thrown perfectly.

Hill went 11-12 or 13 in the afternoon, but it was funny how matt said (mostly short throws).

Both did ok for the first day in my opinion, cant wait till this afternoon practice;)
My issue with his mechanics was when he would lock his knee and swing his one leg like pendulum! That contributed to balls being overthown as well.
Wow I guess the great QB coach Hostler who never played qb but was a db in college didnt correct this flaw. That is just amazing that a former college db couldnt get the youngest qb to convert to a pro set offense. WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOO Nolan is gone!!!!!!!!!!

The fact that Alex connected accurately on that flea-flicker is a perfect snap shot of a moment where he proves he can throw accurately 30-50 yards. This is what will separate him from Hill...you just don't see that kind of throw from him...he's not built that way and that is OK.

However, It seems that Smith still throws behind his man a bit in short routes. If he can improve this side of his game, then he has a strong shot in winning the competition.

I have always been blasted arguing Alex's accuracy down field and especially on the run. Well, it looks like he is starting to prove my argument again. This kid has the skills and talent.

Will it be consistent though?
HERE WE GO ALEX

Alex Smith is going to light it up with all this talent around him. HIS SUPPORTING CAST WAS AWFUL BEFORE AND HE WAS STILL WINNING GAMES.

This was Alex's team before Mike Nolan badly dealt with him, and i think hes going to reclaim his team.

We are much more dangerous with him under center.

Also he was very good mobility/speed. 100% healthy, all signs point to Alex.
Alex wins the job = higher potential for the bigger play but will there be consistency to keep the chains moving?

Shaun wins the job = consistency to move the chains with the accurate short passes but will he be able to take advantage for the opportunity of the big play.

I do support Hill (and why not his a f**king niner ) but the inside of me is rooting for Smith because of his Potential. Hill has hit his ceiling and its a good size one, but we still have no idea how high alex's can go.

Maybe if his Oline could have blocked for him in 07 (thank you larry allen) we would have known how much he can offer.

one more thing i just need to say, f**k you NOLAN, not only for the way he handled Alex but also for never owning up to his mistakes which SING did after his first loss to the Seahawks and Sing even APOLOGIZED..

... I feel better now.

Brotha, i agree with you completely. if smith can keep that long accurate ball, as well as remain consistent with his passes, then i say he will win the competition. People go back and forth about if a strong arm leads to success, and being that it may not all lie with just the long ball, it sure does open your offense up when you know that you have that zip, and accurate ball that doesnt hang or seem to be drunk while it´s traveling 20 or plus yards.

I dont wanna hear from anyone about hill not being a practice player or any of that. i say if he too doesnt do better in the long run, then if you have two players playing exactly the same, just one you add the element of the long ball, then it´s a wrap.

Either way it was just the first day and we got a few weeks to go. Either way, like sing said, the better qb would have proven himself instead of sing just saying hey he´s the guy.

I find it interesting how some camp observers are saying "he's still holding the ball too long, still looks hesitant" when it's the FIRST PRACTICE OF CAMP. The dude hasn't played ball since '07. He might be a little hesitant, but at least his throws are accurate. Plus they said he was putting it together pretty quickly.

Matt Maiocco also said on Twitter: "My quickie, 49ers thoughts from Day 1: Alex Smith and Shaun Hill already look better than at any point during '08 camp in Martz's offense"

I'd say that's GREAT news for BOTH quarterbacks.

Yeah, 7-9 when he played that full season as a 22 year old kid with a weak supporting cast. Id say he was on the right track, then 2-1 under hostler dont forget before he got hurt.

we've been saying that about him for four years, regardless of playing or not. Sometimes he looks great, but the dude cannot consistently make good decistions and throw good passes.

I would love for Alex to win the spot to justify us taking him #1 and paying him, but if the dude cant get it done, we need to just let him go and move on.

Thanks for playing, try again.

Correction...the talent surrounding Smith has improved a lot, making him look better. It is not all on Smith whether it looks good or not,it is a team sport,if one facet is not executing the play,it is not gonna work.
