Smith also had the prettiest pass of practice with a 25 yarder to Ziegler according to Barrows.

Being pretty might get you in the sack, but being in control of the situation, and finishing what you started is what seperates the men from the boys!

In other words........... pretty don't mean sh*t!

I can't wait for Friday night to get here! Then we can begin to put this debate to rest. On second thought, I probably won't be. If either QB plays well (especially Alex Smith) you all know we will still hear about how Denver's defense sucks... it was only preseason... stuff like that.

Youre right but you have to be pretty to get a chance to finish what you started.

Well to add to that, its never easy to switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 unless of course you have a dominate NT, which Denver does not.

I feel ya man. Ive accepted the fact it will never change though. Even if Alex wins lights out and plays well, people will still discount him. Same for Hill. There will always be doubters and naysayers. I dont even bother debating anymore.

I'll let the real experts debate and decide who our starting QB should be.

Don't get me wrong here. I don't hate Smith, and if he is the clear cut choice, then I will try desperately to support the coaches decision, but considering his past, he will be on a very tight leash with me.

It's as simple as this..... when Smith has dropped back to pass before, I was constantly waiting for something horrible to happen, and more times than not, it did. When Hill drops back to pass, I am pretty comfortable that even if we don't complete a pass, that he will not throw a pick, or fumble the ball. I drink alot less beer when Hills QB-ing, than when Smith is. He makes me a f*cking nervous wreck. Then, when Alex makes a mistake, it totally f*cks with his head, and you can see it written all over his face. No cool and calm like your QB should be.

These things worry me about him.
Gary Plummer's quote on KNBR said it best when asked about the QB:

Alex Smith has been throwing the long ball well...but...there's no pressure, there's no contact. We won't know until there's pressure. We don't know if he can handle the pressure. He hasn't shown that he can beat the blitz yet.

He went ahead to say that he likes Hill because he gives us a good chance to win when he's out there. He will take production over potential any day.

I agree. That said..what if Smith shows he can handle the pressure and all that jazz during pre-season...? Who do you start at that point? Thats the dilemma. If you go with Hill because, "well last year he won.." then the whole competition was a farce IMO.

So thats the question: If Smith plays really well in exhibitions...who do you go with? The fair thing IMO would be to start Smith since that was the stipulation of the competition..the winner would be decided after seeing them in camp AND games.

I know Singletary doesnt want to give away too much but its still not clear IMO how they are going to decide. If they are just going to give it to Hill because of last year then they should have just done it already and not wasted everyones time.

That's fine but with Smith it's what if...with Shaun it's 7-3 leadership already DONE and accounted for.
translation = more foot stomping and pouting... sigh

I don't think that it is clear in Singletary and Rayes mind yet either. I think that they might give it to Hill just because of last year if Smith can't truly demonstrate himself being clearly better in the pre-season games. Singletary is getting the most out of this competition so far and I doubt if he makes up his mind until after the Cowboys game. I hate not knowing his decision but I like how thorough and patient he has been in coming to a choice. I have to add that I get a sense that we really do have a legitamate open competition this season with Raye and Singletary compared to last season under Nolan and Martz.

yeah but then if that's the end reason why have a competition to begin with? Waste of time.

If Smith does really well in ps then you give it to him.
