The only way SMith should start opening day is if he looks like Tom Brady and Hill looks like complete garbage in the preseason.

I'm rooting for Alex, but until Hill falls apart this shouldn't even be debatable.

I don't think Hill has to completely fall apart for Smith to get the nod. If Smith is flat out playing better than Hill then he should get the nod. Do I see that happening not to sure yet. I think they both come out pretty even therefore hill gets the starting nod.

Yeah i thought before the start of training camp that Smith would have to play lights out in preseason in order to get the starting job. However after TC, i no longer think that that's the case.

He just needs to play better.

What i'll be most interested to see is how timid Smith will play. Rarely has he just let it fly.

All of this close competition goes out the window when the pre-season games get here and a new form of competition starts and we finally see which one of these guys will differentiate themselves from the other guy. I truly hope that they both continue to have a great competition so that if the other guy is needed the drop off won't be too great.

If Smith and Hill are neck and neck as far as executing the playbook,I think Smith has to get the nod because of his superior athleticism.Hill is scrappy and also looks like he has benefited from having the new QB coach, but when it comes down to it,Smith is the more gifted QB.If he continues to look as good in the preseason as he has in in camp,he is the best choice.Either way I feel that we are going to be better off in the QB department than we have been since Garcia.I guess Friday we get to see finally...damn this week is going to be a long one.
We are a MUCH more dangerous team with Alex Smith in there.

Arm strength and mobility are key, and from what ive been reading Smith has been nailing the deep ball.

He makes us much more dangerous.

this is only true if he can get that damn short game down. He needs to excel in all aspects of playing the QB position. If we could take Smith and Hill and combine them we would have one hell of a QB.

Smith throws a pick and gets sentenced to the hill. The o-line and brandon jones join him in a show of solidarity

Thats pretty cool. Bad for Smith throwing a pick but its cool to see a team come together like that. So much for everyone on the team "hating" on Alex.

By the way, Hill had 15 straight completions. Thats awesome.

My prediction:

Hill and Smith will do about equal in pre-season. Both will have 7/9, 8/10, 6/7 type numbers. Hill will get the nod for the season because of what he's done. Just my feeling on this. He'll be on a very short leash though.

More on the pick:

"Crazy int by Marcus Hudson after Smith's pass was batted at the line and bounced off Vernon Davis and Allen Rossum."
