More to life than money. Plenty of successful people have succumbed to inner demons; be it depression, addiction, etc. In this case the unexpected loss of his mom might have played a role.

In fact well known in sociology and psychology. That doesn't mean deeper things couldn't be going on for a 1 off person. But overall you wouldn't say his life was bad. At least on the surface. I don't know what was underneath. Obviously something very dark which is sad.
